The first car I seriously considered purchasing as a teenager was a Mercury Cougar XR7 Brougham (I think it was a 1971 model). I had saved up a little dough, but I wasn't working full-time, so I decided the $4340.00 they were asking for it was a little too steep. It's funny that I still remember the price more than 40 years later, but I can't recall what I paid for the car I settled on.
I ended up with a 1970 (I think) Oldsmobile Delta 88. It seems like it had a 454 V-8. Whatever it was, it was powerful & finely tuned. You didn't hear it or feel it when you cranked it up - which startled a friend of mine who was riding with me to a ball game - he was in the passenger seat when I put it in gear to back out of the driveway & he nearly jumped out of his seat. "How did you do that? I didn't hear it crank up," he said, with a startled look on his face. I just laughed.
That sucker had power, too. You could be out on the highway and give the accelerator a nudge and jump from 40 to 70 in just a couple of seconds. And that was on the plain old blacktop. Get out on the interstate and it would FLY! I kept that baby for about 10 years before I finally gave it up.
