GREAT article. Thanks, Puck. I particularly liked this line...

“Wait, Corsi and Fenwick are basically the same idea as that old-fashioned plus/minus stat that I already know and love, only with shot attempts instead of goals.” And you would be right! You may then have continued, “That must mean advanced stats guys love plus/minus!” And you would be more wrong than you have ever been about anything in your entire life.

Daniel Sedin - 2:52 shorthanded time on ice vs Sharks. Had 3:21 SH TOI total in 47 games last season. #Torts

Tampa had a grand total of zero shots on goal in the first period against Chicago tonight...

This is pretty fancy:

TSNquizmaster: Candidate for most startling stat of early season: Sharks have outshot opposition by avg. 22.7 shots in first 3 games.

882 - Vancouver
850 - New Jersey

So far this year, there's two categories of goalies I find interesting. One has a save percentage of .938 (8 goals allowed on 130 shots). One has a save percentage of .964 (5 goals allowed on 140 shots).

Pretty good, right?

The first category of goalie is Steve Mason. He's done a tremendous job so far. The second category is goalies playing against the Flyers, which is why Mason is 1-3. We are shooting about 3.5% as a team, which is horrific. Small sample size on both, which means I'd believe both will tend toward the mean, but it looks like our season's gonna depend on which one does so more strongly.

I've got a stat for you. 3% of me is enjoying the Daniel A. project.

Awwww.. that's a shame. :dhd:

Seriously though he'll get better. Maybe not $5.5 M better but he'll be fine.

My god man, I hope you're right. He chumped a puck something fierce at the blue line last night more than once.. He didn't look old. He looked like a beer leaguer.:L

You never know. This might be the year where he finally just declines big time. My bet, though, is that he's gripping his stick a little to tight (insert Joe Thornton joke here) because he wants to play well for the new team.

Once he pots a goal or two he'll be fine. That being said his days as a first liner, and maybe even a good second liner, are probably gone.

Hertl has as many goals this season as the Flyers, Rangers, and Predators have each scored across their entire rosters. He has MORE goals than the Sabres.

Goal differential by division: Central (+23), Pacific (+15), Atlantic (-2), and then the tire fire that is the Metropolitan (-36).

Wonder what that looks like when you take out the Pens stats...
