  • Lions coach Matt Patricia referred to LB Jarrad Davis as a "cornerstone" player.
“I think JD is a cornerstone of what we’re trying to do, and he’s in those big-picture plans of where we’re trying to go,” Patricia said on Tuesday morning during a Zoom call with reporters. “Just (trying to) make sure we have the best season we can this year and then just go from there. And he’s, you know, JD is by far, he’s a solid (as a) rock leader. Everything-you-want-in-the-program type of guy." The Lions recently declined the former No. 21 overall pick's fifth-year team option for 2021, but it sounds as if the organization is holding out hope for a potential breakout in the final year of his rookie deal. The 25-year-old was Pro Football Focus' No. 72 linebacker out of 83 qualifiers last year, missing five games with an ankle injury. Despite Patricia's comments, Davis would undoubtedly have to record a hellacious season to re-sign with the team.

Why even lie?
Pattycakes can blast a legit talent like Slay but can't call a spade a spade here.
At least Belicheck would of said "Just looking forward to the upcoming season" and left it at that.
This guy just spouts off nonsense.

Yuge fans of guys that are unaggressive, have issues tackling and aren't good at all in coverage.

Tavai is even better, since he isn't fast.

Is Staff the last first rounder to a second contract?

I don't remember the exact game. But I remember this play vividly. Early in his rookie season. May of been pre-season or one of his first few games.
There was this scat back in the mold of Jahvid Best.
Davis comes flying in with a clean shot to wrap him up.
The small back didn't make him miss but just shrugged him off like a fly.
I remember just being SHOCKED, like wow that is a really bad sign when your 4-3 MLB is getting shrugged off easily by a scat back.

IS Decker on a second contract?
He should be resigned.
Even though he is Backusesque.

Maybe he is still trying to trade him. He obviously is not being resigned.

This is his 5th year.

They'll prolly franchise tag him next offseason.

Hopefully they just re-sign him. Unless he has a disastrous 2020. He is definitely not a top 5 money guy.

We can just let him walk, I am sure we can replace him by overpaying another teams backup

Matty P will coach him up. The guy is a defensive genius. He has rings from NE and all.

Since when do you decline a 5th year option on a cornerstone player?

Patricia is so full of shit he stinks.

A lot of teams in NFL history have gone from blackouts to the Super Bowl in three years. Lions win the Division with a 12-4 or 13-3 record in MP third year as HC. I'm going with the Lions saving BQ and MP jobs.

They certainly have a weak enough schedule and for the first time 2 full time NFL level coordinators. Even if things go perfect I dont see them doing this well though. 11-5 would be tops in that scenario. Still need to fill the middle of the D-line in FA before I get too excited.
