TBH, I'm much more adept and knowledgeable about hand drums and percussion...not so much the sets/kits.

But maybe this will help narrow it down for you both.

So my son finally pulled the trigger on a drum kit. He went with the Ludwig Evolution kit. The bass drum (20") and toms are really nice; the snare drum is ok, but he'll likely upgrade quickly; the cymbals are decent enough for a budget price, the ride cymbal being adequate enough but definitely will be upgraded, too.

To me, it sounds like a hybrid jazz and rock kit. Overall, I think he did quite well for his first kit; one most 18 year olds would have no problems sporting.
