The league average size is virtually unchanged over the last 30 years. Size is still very much a factor. All we have is smaller centers bigger wings. More focus on skillset over size at the 5.

The only skill id say is effectively a lost art is your big man post game. The Zone has pretty much ended the ability to iso a big and guys like Hakeem are nonexistent.

They have to learn a jumper and excel at help defense

And even guys like Duren who will never have a jumper can use his excellent interior game on offense because he can also play good help D and isn't an issue there.

Post play simply isn’t that efficient unless your post player is elite.

When I played, my high school team had 3 dudes who could shoot the lights out. But our offense was built around force feeding our 6’4” center because that is how basketball was played.

Every other team had bigger and better centers, so We were terrible.

Running a pace and space with the same personnel I think it would have been a pretty solid high school team.

Game has evolved for the better.

It doesn't stop them. They just have to develop skills beyond just being big. If they don't want to do that, they're stopping themselves.

How much should they be talked about though? It's essentially the same situation as the Kings from last year. Bad team takes a big leap, finishes really high up in the standings, but no one talks about them all that much because everyone knows they aren't ready yet to be real contenders.
