Texas has a fraternity guy and intramural star walking on at QB?

Saw this on twitter and thought it was pretty funny. We had a walk-on football player in my fraternity, but not a QB, and he started out living in the dorms. It would be a pretty cool story if he ended up playing and being decent.

From what I'm reading, this is a little different situation than most walk-ons. Most walk-ons come to the school knowing they are gonna be on the team, and don't spend their freshman year being a normal college kid. Sounds like this guy just either decided or was asked to join up. I find it pretty funny, and not in a LOL @ Texas sort of way. I'm just picturing the quarterback from my fraternity intramural team joining up with the football team.

Found one and was pretty darn good. Much better than what they had.

This is exactly why Mack Brown is no longer at Texas. Precisely. Nail on the head. Bulls eye. We've been in a quarterback twilight zone for 5 years.

Currently have two quarterbacks who can play: Swoopes, a sophomore project with one game under his belt, approximately 50 pass attempts.

Jerrod Heard, true freshman, zero pass attempts.

Plus a couple of walk ons to help with practice. That's it.

That situation sounds eerily similar to what happened to us under Bill Stewart. He was let go for the same reason.

It's tough to have quality QB depth when all they do is transfer nowadays when they can't crack the starting lineup. Mack had two highly recruited 4 star QB's transfer on him b/c they were afraid of some competition. When that happens, you get stuck with Derp fucking McCoy as your depth.....

The Auburn coaches found Kevin Greene on the intramural fields and talked him into walking on and the rest is history. Tough to make it that way but it can happen.

Yup, QB's are a fickle bunch. They'll transfer more quickly than any other position.

Mack's recruiting philosophy.....

Swing for the fences on the top 4 or 5 star QB recruit. SPECIFICALLY target guys you think will be BACKUPS and not give him competition. This is how Ash and Derp were recruited.......they recruited them to be backups!

The problem, is when that 5 star is a bust, ala Garrett Gilbert, and no other top recruit would compete with him, ala Andrew Luck, you get left with what Mack left us with.

that's because of a competition Tech has between the 3rd and 4th quarters... our current kicker couldn't even make an extra point, and then this guy drilled one from like 25 or 30 yards

Because we ran counters out of the shotgun for over a decade where the OLine was taught to zone block... what RB or QB worth anything wants to press his luck in that system. Thanks, Greg Davis
