good luck. i thought he had nfl potential. He is taking the 40 year approach. losing a starter out of no where is tough. Cant blame the kid. He graduated and got a job in DC.

That is tough but he was probably the least talented as far as upside of any of the starters. I agree he had potential for the NFL but some guys have other plans and you can't fault them for that. At least he didn't let a team waste a draft pick on him, have a pro bowl caliber year and then walk away.

This was rumored for a while. I guess he got a can't miss job offer and went with it. Can't fault the guy. He loved ND was a good ambassador for the school. I think we'll be okay. I hope this gets both Bars and Q Nelson on the field at the same time. Much nastier group IMO going forward.

I'm happy for Elmer, after all thanks what you're going to college for in my opinion. Preparing for life and work always trumps football 99.9 % of the time. You have to strike when the iron is hot. Good for him.

A friend of mine had a son who got offered a tryout with the Cowboys years ago and he told me that his son just wasn't interested. He played for Eastern Michigan and they must have had interest in him but he went on to work on some security detail on the Mexican border. We had another kid play in the NFL for nearly ten years , pretty good since this is a no traffic light tiny town under 1000 people.

Thats what I was thinking. Those 2 are going to be good ones. Does it hurt a little but I think the Oline can over come it. We now will have 4 new starters on the Oline. Tough but with the classes we been getting at the Oline we should be ok.

Another thing to respect about his decision, he didn't wait until after spring ball to make it. Now they can get the next man in first team reps and there should be more certainty going into fall. The O-line cohesiveness is probably the second most important element on the team, after the QB.

100% agree, sucks to see him leave but he took the 40 year route. Cant blame the kid. I really wish him luck. Got to have respect.

Good for him. I am willing to bet you are going to see more kids do this. Just not at ND, but across CFB. They are starting to realize the impact the NFL can have on one's health. I mean look at the players who retired under 30: Mayo, Borland, Willis. I also saw where Joe Schmidt is not going to even pursue the NFL. Elmer will retire young, and with some cash in his pocket....right move!!

professional baseball is where it is at. No Salary cap, crazy contracts, guaranteed money, longer career, very slim chance of head injuries. The only negative in my mind is a crazy long season but still plenty of downtime.

Joe Schmidt had 0.0% chance of ever making an NFL roster. I think he knows that. I wouldn't use him as an example of people considering whether they'll be able to walk and talk in their 40's-50's if they choose to play pro football.

i think that sums up jeff samardzija's thinking quite well. he's going to make $90 million over the next 5 years for being a rather average pitcher.

If you are a football player and love the game, you will try anything to make it to the NFL. You never know. How about all those UDFA that make a huge impact when given a chance in the right role....I am just saying.
