Lions GM Bob Quinn said walk-year QB Matthew Stafford's "starting number" is $275 million.

"Now that we have a starting number, eventually we will get to it," Quinn said. "These things just get started in April or May." $275 million would not only make Stafford the highest paid quarterback in the NFL, it would make him the highest paid NFL player ever. Stafford should get his market-setting deal this summer. April 1 - 5:32 PM

7 years is still the max deal right? Why are saying 25 a year = 275 then?

Not sure. I heard its might be 5 years with an option for a 6th. But that's not confirmed yet.

275 million for 0 playoff wins? Very Lionsesque of a move.

11 years at 25 a year would equal 275. If that is where he is at and doesn't want to come way down on that, it might be time to let him walk. When you are at best the 5th best QB in the NFL, you do not ask for money that the best would not ask for.

It's high stakes negotiations. You only get one starting point. Since there isn't 32 solid NFL starting quarterbacks, being a top half of the league talent warrants some pretty serious money when it comes time to renew. I'm sure that if common ground can't be found with the Lions management Matthew will have plenty of teams willing to talk terms.

That's what happens when having Dan Orlovsky as a backup can do to a starters ego.

I can see him possibly getting 20 mil a year for 10 years. Thats tops though. The 275 mil number is rediculous. Not sure why he would want a deal that long though. Never know what will happen in 5 years.

I'll just say April Fools since Rob forgot to come back and give us that part. I'm thinking company man Matthew Stafford will sign a team friendly deal. 3 or 4 year extension, $20-22 a year.

A Brady type Patriots move to keep the rest of the team satisfied that he's here for them and not just the money?

I do think that negotiations will end up taking time, driving headlines and speculation. Still, taking over the reign as the top paid QB is not out of the realm of possibility. If that does happen, I would expect the term to be maximized to avoid having to to experience this again any time soon.

Another good reason to balance BPA and need during the draft. Those developmental QB's aren't just a luxury item. Keep the new QB's learning, trade them off to other teams every couple of years.

.................. and move away from the low-lights reel whenever the potential of your backup having to step in comes up.

Stafford is not worth that much. How much capital would be left to maintain and get quality offensive and defensive players?

Let him walk. Bring in Kaepernick and/or Cutler. Draft a QB in the first round.
Send that fucker a message.

What's he done, again?

In Stafford's last coming up contract year he threw for 5,000 plus yards for a huge contract.
Calvin Johnson put in a good season the following year for his coming up contract year for a huge contract.
Suh had one of the best season of his career during his final year to look for greener grass on the other side.

The timing of Marketing for BIG BUCKS and Gravy Train for losses.

So in other words, draft defensive players almost exclusively. The QB will be doing his part to make the offense hum.
