I like it, except the last sentence is a bit too hyperbolic for my tastes. As cool as that home run/comeback game was, I don't know that it "rallied a nation."

It did play a somewhat significant role, especially in the NY area...in that it detracted from the tragedy & horror..... ....and as baseball has been known to do for decades, it brought people back to a simple pleasure, to just enjoy a special magic moment, if just for that 1 day.

And looking back, it really did help to galvanize the rest of the country, but on a more organic level.
This great game truly is America's pastime.

Sheeesh..hard to believe it's been almost 15 yrs ago now.

Amazin's take the nitecap....3-1

Colon sharp, Mets beat Cards 3-1 for doubleheader split

Rubber game on wednesday.

Dilson Herrera was in Las Vegas' original lineup on Tuesday night at Fresno and was scratched. So it would seem that if Jose Reyes requires a DL stint for an intercostal strain suffered in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Cardinals, Herrera is the likely call-up.

Morning Briefing: After split decision, Mets can take series vs. Cards

NEW YORK -- After splitting a doubleheader on Tuesday, the New York Mets now play an important rubber game against the wild-card-contending St. Louis Cardinals.

Logan Verrett (3-6, 4.14 ERA) opposes righthander Adam Wainwright (9-5, 4.09) on Wednesday at 7:10 p.m. ET at Citi Field.

WEDNESDAY’S NEWS REPORTS:

  • Jose Reyes suffered a Grade 1 strain of an intercostal muscle in his final swing of Game 1. Terry Collins said Reyes may miss only a couple of days, though. Read more in the Post, Daily News, Newsday and atNJ.com.

  • Jeurys Familia converted his 52nd straight regular-season save, snapping a tie with Jose Valverde for the third-longest streak in MLB history.

  • Molly Wright, wife of David Wright, gave birth to the couple's first child on Saturday -- daughter Olivia Shea Wright. She weighed eight pounds, 11 ounces.
