BoxedLunch has posted some interesting data on the Massey and Sagarin ratings. I too have looked into these and other SOS lists and they have me interested even more in HOW the committee will use "SOS" in their rankings.

Supposedly, the committee will rank the FBS teams using SOS as one of the "tools". Is the committee really going to do that EVEN if their list differs from th AP, Coaches, and computer top 4? How will teams and fans react to that happening? Even if the list of 4 teams does match the "consensus" how will the seeding process work? I assume SOS will be even more important in that process.

Here are 5 example of SOS's for the year 2013 from Massey (M), Sagarin (S), Anderson & Hester (A&H), and the NCAA.

Vanderbilt-----M-#27------S-#50-----A&H-#55-----NCAA-#91
LSU -----------M-#7-------S-#25-----A&H-#35-----NCAA-#66
Oregon---------M-#36-----S-#29-----A&H-#28-----NCAA-#79
Kentucky------M-#63-----S-#14-----A&H-#16-----NCAA-#27
Clemson-------M-#17-----S-#54-----A&H-#57-----NCAA-#21

These four systems are looking at the same schedules and coming to VASTLY different conclusions as to the strengths. What SOS is the "committee" going to use to "seed" the four finalists?

The top 4 for Massey would be LSU, Clemson, Vandy, and Oregon.
The top 4 for Sagarin are Kentucky,LSU, Oregon, Vandy.

SOS in college football is a myth.

in basketball we have a 13 game ooc, followed by an 18 game conference slate. some conferences play every conference mate home AND AWAY. others (like the old big east) would pair up all their top teams for home & homes each season. On top of that the ooc is loaded with tough teams always scheduling each other & destination tournaments. you even have conference challenges to determine how the conferences compare. then there is a conference tournament at the end of the year.

it is not until all of that happens that SOS is used to determine if a team is worthy of a playoff bid.

with football you have teams competing to race towards the bottom daring each other who can get away with the biggest cakewalk of an ooc (4 games). then you have teams playing only 2/3rd of their conference (8 games) and on top of that there are some really shady scheduling tricks (conference dodging). then you have a single game conference playoff which sometimes features a mismatch.

the amount of games we have to judge sos in CBB is far greater than in CFB. plus the quality of matchups in BB is far superior to that of FB. TBH the only way we can truly judge sos in CFB is if we had round robin conference slates and 6 game ooc slates that involved multiple b10, acc, p12 etc. opponents

I cant wait until the #3 team in the ap and coaches gets lft out of the cfp and crushes their bowl, then, say, the #4 seed in the cfp wins out. Can you say bye bye committee?

The bitching fest will make the BCS bitching look like an old ladies tea party.

I highly doubt you will be disapointed in the amount of bitching. I just hope it isn't me doing it.

I just don't understand why the hell they don't just do an 8 team playoff with each bcs conference winner getting a spot with two at large bids.

I'm betting I'll be quiet in 2014. In 2015 I'm going to be one loud, misserable motherfucker to deal with.:yahoo:

None of those teams would be seeded at all.

The blowup willbe when #4 or 5 is passed over for #6 in the AP or coach's poll. I fully expect it to happen this or next year.

What would be the point in being in a tough conference then?

That's where the 2 at large bids come in to play. History says you'd have the winners of the major conf and 2 more SEC teams in the playoff.:nutswing:

Aww Christ, not this shit.

Funny, that's exactly what I thought when you said conference champions should get an automatic bid.

Just take the top4 from the BCS and be done with it as far as I'm concerned.

What's wrong with just taking the top4 teams? You want to throw in teams that don't even rank in the top10 just because they won a conference?
