Not following the NBA right now because I'm a Football fan first and a Lakers fan second and I'm wondering if the Lakers line up is for real or just so so. Is there a big man at center or just a strong forward at the center position? Any hope for playoffs?

To an extent, this is going to be a learning/transitioning season for the Lakers. Guys like Russell, Randle and Nance will be learning to play in the NBA. Guys like Clarkson will be looking to build on the promise shown last year. Guys like Nick Young and Hibbert will, hopefully, be looking to show some maturity and live up to their talent.

I'm sure that at times it will look spectacular and other times it will look spectacularly bad.

There will also be some transition away from being "Kobe-centric" to being centered around Russell and Randle. How well that goes will be determined by how well Randle and Russell play and how quickly Kobe trusts them.

If everything falls into place, Kobe stays healthy and the youngsters grow up quickly, the Lakers could definitely be in the playoff mix.

My prediction is that they flirt with the playoffs for awhile before settling in at 35-38 wins. The biggest problem is that they are in the West and the West is really deep.

I think the Lakers do have the potential though to over-achieve and make the playoffs. It really just takes winning the games against the weaker opponents and being consistent. Now that might not be to their advantage if they got a good draft pick which I don't think they do. I think some one said it's a top three protected pick, so they would really have to blow their games and get lucky if that is correct. I think it will depend on the chemistry for Hibbert, Brandon and Williams and Huertas. If those guys come together really good and Kobe stays healthy, but the IF's are an awful lot, so it's safer to assume they will suck for one more year

Apparently things in Lakerland are way better than the tenants across the hall in Staples Center where things are as dysfunctional as ever and some players are not re-signing because of it. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of snakes starting with that Celtics-in-hiding HC Doc Rivers. Apparently Ballmer went and got himself in a pickle and we shall see if this transfers over to the product on the court and wins and losses. Here is the link.

At least we don't put on a fashion show every year like the Suns.

was just going through rosters...lakers are really hurt by playing west...they could be in east and do no worse than the 5th seed. id say they got a chance to challenge for 8th spot. need hibbert to play at his max potential.

Hibbert will be a huge key to any success. They were obviously very terrible last season. Hibbert is still an elite rim protector and capable of carrying the team to at least an average defensive level. I don't think that, in itself, wins enough games to make the playoffs though.
