CBS is reporting that Roger Goodell and the NFL are considering changes to the preseason schedule. The changes could be made as early as next year. There are several reasons.......

First, while the stadiums are sold out, attendance is horrible. Most stadiums are less than 75% full and huge sections are seen on TV totally empty. The perfect example was the Patriots at Carolina Panthers game last Friday. Approx. 200 seats were empty in each end zone and no matter how hard the TV crews tried to prevent the seats from being shown, the bright blue empties were extremely hard to miss when watching the teams inside the 20.

Second, the league office is taking a beating because of the number of injuries that occur during the four game schedules each team must play. Heads, knees and feet all seem to take an equal beating.

The biggest problem for Goodell, is that reducing the number of games will reduce the owners' income and that will be the straw that breaks the camel's back. So what can be done.....????

Right now, there's a proposal on the table that all teams must have joint practices for two weeks with another team. One week at home, and one week away. Also is a proposal for two preseason games to go with the practices, one home, one away. Again, revenue loss from two games will most likely get Goodell fired or some owners will have to come up with something that all owners will accept and more important, a pissed off NFLPA will accept.

Most likely, a compromise will be reached and teams will have a combined practice for one week, two preseason games and an additional regular season game. If it works, within 5 years the regular season will be 20 weeks. 18 games with two byes per team. Training camp will open two weeks earlier and there will be two preseason games...............then again, who knows?
