Franchez games played:

2005 132 -- first year as starter
2006 157
2007 147
2008 145
2009 111 -- MCL ligament injury

The fact is the Giants only went two years on a 31 year old Freddy. On the open market, I don't think Scutaro is going to find a team willing to give him a two-year guaranteed contract. Not for a 37 year old MI in the "post" PED era. You can't reasonably expect him to repeat a 130 OPS+ stretch, so why would you feel the need to lock up a league average MI?

Absent a ring, I can see the Giants offering one year, with a second year mutual option and a buyout - and only that because of the lack of MI org depth. And I'd still expect them to see whether any other options are out there - potentially 23 MI free agents hitting the market in 2013.

GP, I would hope they would give him a 2 yr deal especially given our lack of depth in the MI. He is in great shape, shows no signs of slowing down, and frankly sounds like a perfect "mentor" type for our young hitters. At 6 mil per, he isn't exactly costing a fortune but his bat in the lineup has been the true spark we were hoping to get from Pence. I truly believe that offensively, Moped is one of the main reasons why we are in 1st by a bunch.

To be fair to Pence he's had some timely RBIs too. I don't think we are doing this well without him there.

I too think Scutaro is worth a 2 yr deal, think Omar Vizquel, another well-liked, durable, Latin mentor type who plays the game 'right'

That's the only consideration worth talking about. But it seems like everyone has really short memories on Huff and the dodged bullet of Uribe. Old players breakdown fast, and nagging injuries you'd play through without a long-term deal, suddenly put you on the DL when you get the contract. Bottom line, it's not an automatic decision to extend a multi-year contract to Scutaro, for me.

And it's not my money, I don't really care about that aspect of it. It's the Bochy factor vis-a-vis "his guys" and roster spots and playing time. If, in the worst case scenario, the Giants send him packing as easily as they did with Dave Roberts, then I guess I got no problem with it.

Well-traveled Scutaro 'would love to' re-sign with Giants

No surprise, but I’m told that the Giants will make every effort to re-sign Scutaro after this season. His age is not much of a concern; actually, the Giants see the benefits of having a seasoned presence amid an infield that is on the young and green side.

But … what does Scutaro think of the Giants now?

“I would love to come back here,” he told me. “I really love it here. There are great fans, it’s a great place to play. More important, it’s a place where you have a chance to win every year.”

Scutaro even said he would be willing to re-sign during the short window of exclusivity after the season and before he’d hit the open market. He isn’t looking to shop his services as much as to find a place to call home.

I asked a Giants official why a talented, winning player like Scutaro has moved so much throughout his career. He thought on it for awhile, and offered an interesting answer: Scutaro has played for a lot of American League teams that rely on the longball. It's here, with the Giants, where his skills as a run manufacturer and contact man have the greatest value and can be put to the greatest use.

And you decided to further prove my point when I stated ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS?

I think there is a consistency factor as well as a price tag discrepancy when comparing someone like Scutaro to someone like Huff or even Uribe. With both Huff and Uribe, they had been questionable with their fitness for the duration of their careers while playing Jekkyl and Hyde with the stats they post from year to year. Scutaro has been in great shape since he has come up and has been consistent with his production for the most part. Now if you look at their relative price tags with Sabes' penchant for signing SOME vet to a 2yr/6+ mil per contract, I would prefer it to be someone as consistent and durable as Scutaro has shown.

You're welcome. Clearly, he's the fifth main reason among the eight position players. Perhaps you meant main among the forty man roster? Yes, that makes more sense.

That's fine. I doubt he gets 2/12+. He's more likely to get 1/6 or 2/10. If it's 2/10 and he shits the bed, I expect you to defend Sabean across the net. Deal?

I wouldn't have thought he gets 2/12 either, until the LAD's went on a spending spree, and Sandy Eggo changed owners.

I got him at 2/12 in my latest Rosterbation update.

Yeah, the new TV money is pushing everything up. What happened to your rep power?

RBIs since Aug 1st :

RBIs :
Pence 34 (in 172 PAs)
Posey 29 (in 165 PAs)
Scutaro 28 (in 178 PAs)
Pagan 20 (in 184 PAs)
Belt 19 (in 131 PAs)
Arias 18 (in 83 PAs)
Panda 17 (in 113 PAs)

Scutaro isn't doing too badly. What surprised me the most (since his over-all stats with the Giants suck so much) is that Pence leads the team in RBIs since Aug 1.
