Teams have until 3 PM PST today to protect eligible prospects from the Rule 5 draft by adding them to the 40-man roster. The Giants currently have 36 players on the 40-man, so they can add up to 4 players without corresponding roster moves.

Erik Miller
Grant McCray
Aeverson Arteaga

would be my three picks.

Something to watch for today: The Rays have a full 40-man. The Giants and Rays have connected on a few minor 40-man moves in the past. Someone like Kameron Misner could be added or on the move today. TB is a team to watch for trades.

Trevor McDonald had a strong finish to the year, posting a 0.96 ERA, 9.3 K/9, and a 4.88 SO/W rate in 37.2 innings with Eugene. Still a bit on the younger side (22), but someone who will likely move a little faster up the minors now that he is on the 40-man.

The notable omissions are Grant McCray and Aeverson Arteaga. Both finished last year in A+. Giants are making a bet that they won't lose either one by leaving them unprotected for next month's R5 draft.

I think we will see McDonald and Teng in SF this year.

Miller is the one who intrigues me the most though. Dude is unhittable. Can't throw strikes yet, but doesn't get crushed when he has to come into the zone behind in the count. If he can just cut down on the walks a little bit, he'll be a LHRP option behind Rogers.

Teng is a possibility. I'm not convinced about McDonald. He'll need a full healthy season to speed track his way to SF. He hasn't had a season like that since being drafted.
Miller may get a chance to win a bullpen spot in spring training.

We pick 13th. I don’t really expect us to take part this year.

Curvin Kervin was taken by the Spanks in the AAA phase of the draft from the Astros.

Giants passed. So far, they haven’t lost anyone yet.
Only ten players taken in the major league portion of the draft. It is getting close to be unnecessary for teams to protect players from this draft. However, the Rule 5 Draft will only be eliminated if the players' union doesn't care about it. Since it primarily helps minor leaguers (in theory) then they probably won't care if it gets eliminated.

I don't get the Garcia pick. He was absolutely awful in AA last year. Lopez, however, is intriguing. It appears he missed all of 2023 with an injury but he looked fairly decent in 2022 at low A ball, playing 3rd, short and 2nd. However, infield is really crowded in A ball so I'm not sure where he will fit.

Just a low risk flyer with the idea that we can rehab him back to full prospect hood.

Gotta admire the hustle.

Also, Grant McCray is still in the org.

I thought he'd get claimed.

Giants lost Hayden Cantrelle (1st round), Sean Roby (3rd round) and PJ Hilson (4th round) in the minor league phase of the draft. The Giants must really not have cared about keeping either Roby or Hilson to have them exposed after so many rounds.

Two teams, the Marlins and the Phillies took players in all 5 rounds of the minor league phase. I guess that is one way to restock the farm.

Teams don't seem to be taking much risk on major league Rule 5 guys any longer. Gone are the days where the Padres take 3 players in one Rule 5 draft.
