BOSTON (CBS) — Politics can make strange bedfellows. So, too, can Roger Goodell.

The NFL commissioner’s discipline on Tom Brady for “DeflateGate” has caused many football fans in New England to express outrage, but now an unexpected rival has joined that fight.

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman spoke to USA Today about Brady’s current situation, and Sherman sees Brady being held to much more strict standard than some misbehaving team owners.

“You’re fining players more than you’re fining organizations?” Sherman said, referencing the four-game ban that will cost Brady about $2 million. “That should bring up some red flags. But nobody’s talking about that.”

Coincidentally, Sherman targeted Colts owner Jim Irsay, the man whose organization kicked off this seven-month saga. Irsay was arrested and charged with a DUI last March, and police found $29,000 in cash and numerous bottles of prescription drugs in Irsay’s car at the time of the arrest.

“Last year, Jim Irsay got fined what, 500 grand?” Sherman told USA Today. “Owners can only be fined so much. There’s a cap. And Brady gets fined (roughly $2 million). Whether the crimes are the same or not, a suspension is a suspension, a fine is a fine. Game checks.”

Sherman noted that the $1 million fine to the Patriots organization is “peanuts,” considering how much money the team will generate this year.

Nobody knows how U.S. District Judge Richard Berman will rule, but Judge Richard Sherman has made his beliefs clear.

This may be a record even for you

Players are speaking against the union

yeah, he plays only one side of the field and i think is a bit overrated.

doesnt mean i cant say the man makes a valid point off the field.

Or you can admit you're a hypocrite and you will side with someone that murders your family if they defend Brady

"So tired of losing SBs because of this guy Brady"

I'll keep that secret safe

hypocrite?

id be a hypocrite if i said sherman was a great CB.

hypocrisy on an opinion of a player on the field stops as soon as he crosses the chalk lines.

this isnt sherman the CB.

basically the ruling is "regardless of what kind of buffoonery is involved, an unqualified arbiters decision cannot be overturned and must be adhered to".

so, even if berman (who we all can agree is shaming the NFL badly for a reason) says what goodell did was wrong...with all the jackassery thats gone on...his decision is upheld.

if thats the case, brady has to settle.

1 game

massive fine

agrees to certain "language" in the wells report

and, if/when brady does sit...the network executives wont be happy with goodell...at all.

I'm sure all these guys can cite the important SCOTUS opinion of MLBPA vs. Garvey and speak about it intelligently.

In a per curiam opinion, the Court reversed the Court of Appeals' determination because it conflicted with the Court's cases limiting review of an arbitrator's award entered pursuant to an agreement between an employer and a labor organization and prescribing the appropriate remedy where vacation of the award is warranted. The opinion stated that: "Judicial review of a labor- arbitration decision pursuant to such an agreement is very limited. Courts are not authorized to review the arbitrator's decision on the merits despite allegations that the decision rests on factual errors or misinterprets the parties' agreement." The opinion continued "even 'serious error' on the arbitrator's part does not justify overturning his decision, where, as here, he is construing a contract and acting within the scope of his authority."

That case alone should win the day for the NFL. If the judge ignores Garvey I'd be shocked. I'd love to read HOW he gets around it though.
