One of those moments you never forget. Standing in the radio shop in the Air Force listening to the local station waiting for any news. Then around 12:30 AM he rattles off the names of the dead. Saved Van Zant for last and said “He’s gone”... then played “Free Bird”.
My dad told me later that he experienced the same feeling when Hank Williams died. Incredible sadness.
Ronnie Van Zandt was a great song writer. He was the heart and soul of Skynyrd. One More From The Road was probably my favorite live album as a kid. I believe that only Artemis Pyle and Gary Rossington are still alive from the original band.
For some reason I grabbed a Skynyrd CD the other day for the first time in probably a couple years. Listened to Don't Ask Me No Questions, That Smell, Saturday Night Special, and Call Me the Breeze on the way to work.
Later that day I read that is the sad 40th anniversary of the plane crash. Freaked me out a little that I grabbed that CD out of the 3000 or so that I have.
Skynyrd is by far my favorite rock band. I've had a chance to see them 100 times, but I just have no interest in seeing Skynyrd without Ronnie just like I have no interest in seeing Marshall Tucker without Toy Caldwell.
This is my favorite Skynyrd song. Love that old honky tonk piano.
