I hope this doesn't prove to be a mistake but I'm not overly confident.
I'm kinda sorta in this camp about giving him a shot, but I'm very skeptical.I will have an open mind on this. I see a lot of great players become mediocre coaches. And some mediocre players become great coaches. This was a guy that had a good college career without the incredible natural talent that many top QB’s have. He obviously put the preparation in that allowed him to get to the level he did. Hopefully this type of preparation will be necessary to exceed in the position of Offensive Coordinator.
That’s quite a promotion though. He’s not even in his 30’s and the marquee programs should be paying 7 figures for their coordinators.I will have an open mind on this. Moreover he’s probably likely to just be Kelly throwing his voice.
The problem with the hire, and no offense to Tommy, he’s a bright kid who clearly understood Kelly’s offense, his limitations were physical, plus he’s been around football his whole life ie his dad, but the hire just reeks of ND being content with the status quo. They should be figuring out how to go from being a good team that wins most of its games, to an elite team that doesn’t just qualify, but competes, for championships or major bowls.
Not making a home run hire isn’t going to help in that regard.
i agree its a shit hire...there has to be something to do with book. also i heard the 2021 recruit likes tommy too.The problem with the hire, and no offense to Tommy, he’s a bright kid who clearly understood Kelly’s offense, his limitations were physical, plus he’s been around football his whole life ie his dad, but the hire just reeks of ND being content with the status quo. From what I understand the players are 100% on board, including recruits like Buchner.I’m not sure what would qualify as a home run hire. A home run offensive coordinator would likely be gone in a year or two, the first time a good head coaching job became available. We don’t need to look at a coordinator with the idea of promoting him to be head coach (unless he’s been a successful head coach somewhere already). Look at the last few head coaches we hired without head coaching experience. Charlie Weis, Bob Davie, Gerry Faust (I’m not counting high school coaching) there is obviously no direct correlation between being a good coordinator to being a good head coach.
I’m OK with giving Tommy a shot at it, but I think he has to be on a short leash. He obviously familiar with Kelly’s offense and is young enough to have a good rapport with the players, but I’m curious as to how he will relate to parents on the recruiting circuit.
