Hey, why not: Put New York Yankees' Alex Rodriguez on All-Star team! - SweetSpot - ESPN

I'm old enough to remember when the All-Star Game was about stars. Oh, the fans still voted in the starters, but because you had to work at it back then -- go to a game, punch out a ballot, turn the ballot in after the game instead of leaving it under your seat -- they almost always did a fine job. No more Omar Infantetypes! Sure, it's not like the rosters were littered just with stars -- when I attended the 1979 game in the Kingdome, the All-Star rosters included Jeff Newman, Dave Lemanczyk, Sid Monge, Don Stanhouse, Craig Reynolds and Mike LaCoss -- but you always felt you were getting the biggest names in the sport.

If you were an All-Star, you were an All-Star. Pete Rose made it 15 times in one 16-season stretch. Mike Schmidt made it 10 out of 12 years during his prime. George Brett made it 13 consecutive seasons, Rod Carew 18 consecutive seasons, Johnny Bench 12 consecutive seasons. Were they always the best at their positions at the break? Probably not. But they were the headline names in the sport.

Offense has been doing it's job the last month or so. The pitching's been crap again though (outside of Buchholz and Rodriguez (who's had his ups and downs).

Is there "hope" for this season? I mean I clearly don't see them winning the World Series but perhaps being 2nd in the East

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers designated veteran reliever Brandon League for assignment Thursday, essentially cutting him loose unless he decides to accept a minor league assignment.

League, 32, had issues with his shoulder from the earliest days of spring training, and his minor league rehabilitation assignment was coming to a close, with the 30-day limit arriving Tuesday.

Two days earlier, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said the team had been debating whether League was among the seven most effective relief pitchers at the team's disposal. Apparently, the response came back in the negative.

The Dodgers will have to pay League what remains of his $7.5 million salary.

League worked hard to return after admitting at one point he considered whether his career might be over when doctors reviewed the MRI on his right shoulder. It had bothered him all spring. League pitched 10⅔ minor league innings of rehab and allowed just one run, although the 94 mph sinking fastball he used to throw was nowhere to be found. League, according to scouts, struggled to touch 90 mph.

League pitched two strong months for the Dodgers after they acquired him near the trade deadline in 2012, then signed a three-year, $22.5 million extension offered by then-general manager Ned Colletti. League struggled after the deal, ceding closing duties to Kenley Jansen early in the contract, but he had a bounce-back season as a middle reliever in 2014, posting a 2.57 ERA.

Boston Red Sox angling to make AL East five-team free-for-all - Boston Red Sox Blog - ESPN

Now, as the Red Sox reach the mathematical midpoint of this season seven games under .500 (37-44) but only six games out of first place in the division, all indications are that 2015 will play out more like 2000 than any of the races that followed it.

The Orioles and Yankees, who are tied for first and have played 79 games, are on pace to win 86 games. The Rays and Blue Jays are halfway through, on pace to win 84 games. The Sox are on track, meanwhile, to win 74 games. But after taking two of three from the Rays over the weekend and three of four this week from the Jays, banging out a season-high 19 hits in Thursday night’s 12-6 win, the Sox have graduated from lost cause to long shot with a puncher’s chance.

Earlier this week, we noted that only four teams have come from seven games under .500 this late in a season to advance to the postseason. There’s a reason the 1914 Braves are known as the Miracle Braves. They went on a ridiculous tear and finished with 94 wins. The others were the ’73 Mets, the ’74 Pirates, and the ’84 Royals. The Mets won the division with 82 wins, the Pirates with 88, the Royals with 84.

Let’s say, for argument’s sake, that it will take 90 wins to capture the East this season. To reach that number, the Sox would have to go 53-28. Since baseball went to a 162-game schedule in 1961, there has been only one season where the Sox pulled that off. That was in 2004, when they went 54-27 the rest of the way.

Not really. As long as they continue to pitch like crap, I have little (if any) confidence in them making a run. But it helps that the rest of the division isn't very good.

This is true they can't pitch to save their lives right now. Wonder if this "good play" will make Cherington and company try to get Hamels (I hope not but would not shock me if they will be more inclined to try and do it now).

I would love to see Boston score eight first inning runs in each of its next three games if that's what it takes to earn a three game sweep of Houston this weekend.

Rangers host LAA for three games this weekend. Interesting story how Hamilton plays for his new old team against his old old team.

Taijuan Walker's last 7 starts:

1.68 ERA, 48.1 innings, 35 hits allowed, 3 walks, 51 strikeouts

ERA sits at 4.34. It was 8.74 at the beginning of May.

Not as dramatic as Walker, but Yovani Gallardo has also begun pitching much better lately. Since the beginning of June his ERA is .45. It was 3.88 over the first two months of the season.

Yankees to Pay $150,000 to "Pitch In For Baseball Charity in order for A-rod to get his 3,000th hit ball back from Hample.

I'm a little shocked the Yankees decided to pay. Granted it was too charity so that could be why.

Wouldn't be any more ridiculous than seeing Jeter paraded around all over the place and the all star appearance. Jeter as a SS was definitely good and deserving of the HOF, but the guy was treated like he was baseball's greatest thing to ever play the game. Give me a break.

Are the Giants about to light up Gio? I think they'll need to if they are going to stop their three game skid, since I expect Peavey to give up a run or six.

Hahaha... beginning tonite, the Mets will be in LA for 3, then SF for 3.
They may not score more than a total of 3 runs on the entire road trip...

Is Sandy Alderson still asleep in his big comfy executive office chair recliner??
