Penn State football: Jerseys to be nameless - College Football - SI.com

But for the past three seasons, names appeared on jerseys after former coach Bill O'Brien decided to recognize the players’ dedication to the team and the university.

That decision came after former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky was accused of sexual misconduct with young boys over a 15-year period. Sandusky was eventually convicted on 45 counts of sexual absue in 2012 and sentenced to 30 to 60 years in jail.

The team wore no-name jerseys for one game last season, a homecoming loss toNorthwestern in September.

The school said that head coach James Franklin and several Penn State football letterwinners met with the team to inform them of the decision.

“For 125 years Penn State proudly followed a very simple idea: "Black Shoes. Basic Blues. No Names. All Game,” Franklin said.

He said members of the 2012 team will always be remembered because they stayed “loyal, sacrificed & chose to play for this institution during the most difficult of times” and “secured an enduring place in our program's history.”

“Their commitment will never be forgotten,” Franklin added. “However, it's time we bring back the tradition that represented Penn State for 125 years. We are a strong family, playing for one goal, one university and there is only one name that truly matters, Penn State.”

I personally liked their clean look prior but understood why they would make the change originally. Now that those kids have come and graduated, I think it's fine for them to go back to their classic look.

My first reaction was to say, "Who gives a flying fuck?", but then I realized I kind of do...

Meanwhile Michigan just inked a deal with Nike, so I guess we can look forward to a clusterfuck of ugly ass uniforms being worn by the Wolverines in the near future? :D

All that was great generations ago but in todays "its all about me" world, I'd just leave the names on the back.
Yeah, yeah, it' all about team :blah::blah::blah: but other programs don't seem to have any problems.

Recognize the players. They want people to know who they are..

Clean look? Don't get me wrong I respect the hell out of those that appreciate tradition and history, but hell, those are as plain jane as it comes. In 1935 they were considered boring. Throw in a little something for Gods sake. There are Jr. Highschools that practice in white t-shirts, pants off the Play it Again Sports Store rack that are more stylish. So old that the face grills look odd on their helmets.

I think this is a great idea. Having grown up in PA, the tradition of PSU football is a very important thing. I think they've handled things great post Sandusky as far as recognition of the players that stayed, and now getting back to what PSU has always been, one team, no names, and winning games.

I reluctantly agree with this. While the idea of emphasizing the team over the individual player is noble or romantic, it also seems a bit obsolete. Perhaps that is why PSU's win over Miami in the '87 Fiesta Bowl is among the most satisfying games in my life time.

Well, two out of three ain't bad... :dhd:

Given the sanctions I'd say they won more games than anyone predicted they would have. So there's that.

Despite the fact that there shouldn't even be a Penn State football program and despite the fact that their head coach is a massive asshole, I like the nameless uniforms. I liked Bobby Knight's reason on it back in the day and still do.

@ellupo makes yet another lame attempt at trolling me about James Franklin in 3... 2... 1...

With an OOC schedule of Temple, Buffalo, San Diego State, and Army they should remain nameless.

Kansas State and Texas Tech want their schedule back.

Sadly I agree. I just posted recently how I miss the old days of playing Bama, ND, Nebraska, Miami etc. year after year. I hope Franklin will start scheduling better.

"Why are you scheduling such a tough OOC? You are making us look bad!"
