***9679; Rangers money man Bob Simpson remarked during an awards banquet last night that the Rangers want their payroll to be in the $140-150 million payroll range by 2015, which would require the team to "increase revenues by 40 percent across the board over the next four years" by way of increased ticket prices/sponsorship sales/season ticket sales; Simpson also mentioned the possibility of once again selling the naming rights to Rangers Ballpark in Arlington in order to generate additional revenue, a move that played out rather poorly during the Tom Hicks era but was invalidated when the club severed its ties with Ballpark naming rights holder Ameriquest before the 2007 season

Could have sworn I mentioned that number a week or so ago...

Good read/interview with Bob Simpson here: Rangers owner Bob Simpson has reason to be thrilled | Texas Rangers | Texas Rangers News and ...

Going to invest roughly $100 million (of their own money) over the next few seasons for payroll, ballpark improvements, etc. Wow.

140-150 million over the next several seasons,

And you have to think a good chunk of that extra payroll is going to include giving extensions and arbitration raises to eligible players over the next couple years,

Giving out a big contract this year to a Fielder or a Pujols almost assuredly caps us out in 2015 already

Not sure if thats what you're saying but I'm sure someone will take that slant

^^ would that be with Young's chunk of change coming off the books?

With the team in its current state... I could see them around 120-125 after extentions, arb, etc. In 2015.

It was more of a calming post to those that are worried about the owners not increasing the payroll to "keep the core" together....

Well if they re-up with Young he'll still make at least 5 per, plus some of his money is deferred from his last contract

MY's contract is thru 2013 when he will be 37, i would not be surprised to see him retire after that season

He will not be retiring at that time. He will be too close to 3000 hits to retire...someone, if not the Rangers, will sign him just so he can break that mark in their uniform

if he hits his average of 200 hits in each of the next 2 seasons he would be at 2461 hits at the end of the 2013 season. that would leave him 539 hits short and at 37 years of age. which team, other than the Rangers, would be willing to sign him to a minimum 3-year contract?

I think this all depends upon how well MY is actually playing at the time. It also is contingent upon how well the Rangers are performing and what their focus is at the time. I can see MY playing well into his 40's as a DH.

to get to 3000+ hits he might have to. he would have to average 200 hits a season for the next 5 years which would take him to 40. do you believe that he can?

I reckon so. He ain't showing any signs of slowing down. He's a great contact hitter who's never had any injury issues and he's in good shape. He fits the bill of a guy who could play at a high level for that long. He had a career high in BA last year while DH'ing for first time, I would think keeping him off the field will keep him fresh for a good while. Wouldn't be surprised if he puts up the same kind of numbers the next few years.
