Do you honestly think Belichick would use the rule again? He got what he needed, used it to his advantage and will find another rule to bend next year.

It's always the losers who screech the loudest. Polian with the Colts and the genius Harbaugh with the Ravens. They don't want to change the rules for the sake of the game......they want to change the rules because they looked like fools when their teams and coaches couldn't handle it on the field.

So now an ineligible receiver will be a tackle ineligible.

And the eligible Patriot will already be downfield catching the pass.....

apparently the rule rule change suggestion has no legs from what I heard yesterday. But like Ken said, BB used it to great success and we'll probably never see it again.

Pretty sad...the NFL has to dumb it down for others to keep up with BB and his evil/smart mind. LOL

What's funny is that BB told the refs prior to the game. During the game the refs slowed down the game and even told Hairball's D not to cover the ineligible eligible receiver and they still couldn't figure it out. Why do the refs arbitrarily decide when they can slow play down there are already rules in place for that.

Apparently Harbaugh cried loud and long enough.

Now it's illegal to do. A 5 yard penalty. This is stupid.

PHOENIX -- A much-deconstructed formation led to a New England Patriots touchdown drive in the playoffs. Next season, it will lead to a 5-yard penalty.

The NFL passed a rule Wednesday that makes it illegal for an offensive player wearing an eligible number -- between 1 and 49, or 80 to 89 -- to report as ineligible and line up outside the tackle box. Now, if a player is declared ineligible yet aligns outside the tackle, the offense will be penalized for illegal substitution.

AP Photo/Steven SenneIn their playoff meeting, Ravens coach John Harbaugh objected to the Patriots' substitution pattern. Now, if a player is declared ineligible and then lines up outside the tackle, it will be a penalty.
The rule, proposed by the NFL's competition committee, resulted from a successful series of plays by the Patriots during a 35-31 playoff victory over Baltimore in January.

In that game, Patriots running backShane Vereen was ineligible yet lined up as a slot receiver on three separate plays. That left the Ravens' defense confused about whom to cover, and the Patriots used it as impetus for a touchdown drive. Vereen ran a route backward because he could not cross the line of scrimmage, but it forced the Ravens to still account for him.

Next season, if Vereen declares as ineligible, he would have to line up in the tackle box.

"Whatever it is, it is," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said Wednesday. "It would affect a lot of other plays, the spread punt formation and stuff like that. Whatever the rule is, it is."

Before the owners meetings, competition committee co-chair Jeff Fisher said several teams had brought up the Patriots' formation as an issue that needed resolution.

"Unless we had some guidelines in place, this thing may get out of hand," Fisher said.

now that the element of surprise (despite kind of hinting it was coming to both refs and Harbaugh..but heyyy) is no longer applicable what is the fun of using this rule again anyways? BB is smart enough to come up some new material for the kiddies to learn from.

it's just pathetic that any time a team has an issue with something the Pats did they go running to the league to get rules changed.

Yes, They tried it against the Colts and since they were ready for it, it wasn't successful.

To be filed in the circular file cabinet.

I think Belichick will pick his spot in primetime and come up with something as a FU to the league... just on principle. Too bad the Ravens aren't on the schedule next year. The bellyaching from Harbaugh would be sweet.

Would be sweet if they meet in the playoffs and BB embarrases him again.

I'm sure those Ratbirds will be seen in the playoffs though. BB will get his revenge.

I think they also tried the Shane Vereen dipsy-doodle too and that didn't work.

Like people said, our Bill will just try something else because Haurbaugh looks so fetching with a befuddled look on his face.

Basically it's one thing or the other.

Belichick puts in a new offense in 2001. It's called the "Spread Offense" with 5 wide receivers. No one had ever done it before. So what happens/ Every team that has a quarterback who can throw starts using the Spread Offense.

Belichick puts in an offense that confuses other teams, "The Ineligible Receiver" and after looking at it closely, they still can't figure out what to do with a WR who drops back behind the line of scrimmage. What will Belichick do with him? Lateral 15 yards outside the pocket and throw a pass? Put the WR in motion and have the QB run toward him and hand off? Nah, let's just make it illegal and we won't have to worry about it.

Either do what the Patriots do or stop them from doing it..
