Pretty much this.

When the season starts, I think the dogs, Giants and Padres will be favored to go 1-2-3 in some order. And I would not be super-shocked to see it go down in ANY order between the 3.

With 3 real teams in the division now, I doubt we get a WC in this division, though.

That lineup is going to command respect. They're going to be looking at better pitches.

They have 3 pretty good starters in their rotation. Kennedy is a workhorse and Ross+Cashner are both young and getting better. Their rotation is solid.

There's a lot of upside in that rotation, but Cashner's only thrown 150+ innings once and has an extensive injury history. Josh Johnson has thrown only 80~ innings over the last two seasons.

I do think Kennedy's going to have a nice year, especially with his peripherals last year.

As a diehard Padres fan for the past 40+ years, this team has a lousy track record of owners and GMs that have done little to maintain a competitive team from year to year. I'm thrilled with the recent acquisitions of Kemp, Myers, Norris and Upton, but what I want to really see is an ownership committed to building a competitive farm system and bringing in top tier free agents. If Kemp and Myers stay healthy this year, I think we can compete for a WC sport, but we are a year or two out from winning the division.

I just have a hard time seeing the Padres as a threat in the West.

they are making the right moves, but at this point it's still playing catch up with SFO and LAD. Should be a fun team to watch with plenty of firepower.

Of course not. You don't usually turn from dud to title contenders overnight. Its a stepping stone...they are generating interest and giving the fans a reason to come the ball park again. Put themselves at least in the wild card hunt. They will see how this teams plays out. Figure out the strengths and weaknesses from on-the field performance and probably do more trading to fix some of that weakness if they feel they are good enough to make a legit run this year.

As for the "gutting the farm." This information age with all these site that have in depth valuations of prospects. Prospects have become very over-ratted. They haven't even given up Wisler, Hunter Renfroe, or Hedgers who are the top 3 guys in the system. From what I've heard, the guys they got for finding armature talent are top notch and should have no problem re-tool the system with depth anyways.

If Upton is 1 and done..they still have a draft pick to fall back on for a QO.
