How cats wind up in shelters:

One birthday I had as a kid -

I'm sitting at the dining room table with the cake (in scrumptious, pristine condition) sitting on the table. I'm waiting to dive in and put the finishing touches on another great birthday.

Suddenly, from all the way across the house, the unmistakable sounds of a cat revving up its engines could be heard. You know how some cats temporarily go insane with a sudden burst of energy? Such was happening here.

BAM! Around the corner the cat is running at full speed, its eyes and face focused solely on my cake just like Benny Hill might notice a hot babe. I instinctively understand that the forthcoming leap towards the table (and, consequently, a landing in MY delicious fucking birthday cake) was moments away. Without time to think, I raise my arm up as a barrier just as the flash of gold was going upwards. Panic, scramble, scramble, scramble, goes the cat. Abandon jump! Abandon jump! The cat lands on its feet and tears off in another direction. Disaster averted.

If she had made that jump, I would have killed that cat.

LOL. Not really funny, but it makes me laugh because of a story from my childhood.

I was visiting my aunt and uncle (in Vancouver of all places) when the cops ring the doorbell looking for my cousin. He was a criminal-type kid back then (older than me). It turns out that he had assaulted a cop with his BMX bike. I shit you not. I was about 10 years old and I must have given my dad the biggest face ever because he burst out laughing.

I guess he threw his bike at a cop who wanted him for something. My dad just laughed and shook his head. My aunt and uncle went ballistic.
