So, eloco gave me a fantastic idea. I teach a class, mostly freshman, at the college level. There are a surprising amount of things these students are woefully unaware of. I'd like to exploit this fact by giving them tough extra credit questions. We can start a solid contest, can even be weekly since I give weekly quizzes, to earn the right to stump my students. I will gladly forward on the results of your question. This week is fall break, but next Friday I'm giving a midterm and will have three questions up for grabs. Let's do this thing. So far I have had them draw a cow, name the 7 dwarves, name TMNT, name the starting lineup from Who's on First, listen and identify the Last of the Mohicans soundtrack, and answer a few different riddles, just as an idea of where I tend to go with these. Have at it.

Ask them to name the 8 planets, and then reduce their grade if they say Pluto as one of their 8.

Follow-up to BGDave's question - Which is closer to the Earth, the moon or the sun?

Nah, all up to you. Mostly I've been sticking with stuff that's most familiar to me, so 90s/00s pop-culture. But hey, I did an Abbott and Costello question. I'd like stuff that's not impossible, and maybe that someone simply using critical thinking can get too. So pop-culture references that aren't *TOO* hard, questions that simply challenge critical thought, that stuff.

Town A and Town B are 120 miles apart connected in a straight line by railroad tracks. Train 1 leaves Town A at 2:00 pm traveling at a speed of 40 miles an hour. At 2:40pm, this train must stop for 40 minutes due to maintenance, and then resumes its path at the same rate of speed. Train 1's conductor falls asleep at 3:00pm. Train 2 leaves from Town B at 3:00pm traveling 20 miles per hour. After 30 minutes, it has to stop for one hour due to maintenance as well. Train 2's conductor spends at least 15 minutes of the trip in the dining car havnig a snack and coffee. If neither of these trains has any brakes and they are on a direct collision course for each other, what jersey number did Wayne Gretzky wear that was retired by all NHL teams?

And the early leader in the clubhouse...
