IIRC, Dabo did something similar when he first got the Clem job. Sacrificed some of his salary so assistants could get a bump. But, nowadays, my forgeterer is a lot better than my rememberer.
I think Venables was one of the first big money assistants, so possibly

Why not? OSU got the cash..use it. Assistants make or break recruiting. Keep 'em happy they are less likely to leave

Smartest way to keep a staff in tact is to pay them. Day doesn’t seem the type to have an ego and for his sake I hope he doesn’t. Never would have thought he would have been the guy OSU went with, but the way you get a job like that if you are day is being a program first type of guy is taking care of staff members you want to stick around.

Dabbo and Ed O both had top 3 in paid assistant coaches staff’s and were hired from within. This is becoming the new blueprint.
