WASHINGTON -- (9/8)

FIRST PITCH: Now this should be a very interesting Matt Harvey Day.

For the first time since the innings-cap hullabaloo exploded -- and potentially for the last time for a while -- Harvey (12-7, 2.60 ERA) pitches for the New York Mets. The innings-restricted ace opposes Washington Nationals right-handerJordan Zimmermann (12-8, 3.38) on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.

General manager Sandy Alderson on Monday acknowledged Harvey would make fewer starts during the remainder of the regular season than the Mets originally planned. The team originally had four penciled in, including Tuesday.

Regardless of Harvey's availability, Alderson said, the Mets will stick with a six-man rotation because Noah Syndergaard's innings need to be conserved, too. So expect to see Logan Verrett subbing for Harvey at points down the stretch, including likely the next turn.

USA Today reported that the Mets' plan will have Harvey skipped once after Tuesday's start, then pitch again. Harvey also would pitch during the final series of the season, against the Nationals at Citi Field, if those games are meaningful. As for the postseason, the report suggested the Mets' plan is for one start per round and, potentially, no more than 60 pitches in any outing.

Responding to the USA Today report, Alderson told ESPN.com on Monday night: "Any plans we have for the rest of the regular season are tentative. We have not spent any time yet on a ‘playoff' plan. Nothing has been discussed in that regard."

Harvey sits at 166 1/3 innings. The most innings ever thrown in the first season back from Tommy John surgery belongs to John Lackey with the Boston Red Sox in 2013, according to ESPN Stats & Information -- 215 1/3 between the regular and postseason. The only other pitchers on that list to have exceeded 200 innings their first season back: Adam Wainwright (213 2/3 in 2012), Tommy John (207 in 1976) and Jake Westbrook (202 2/3 in 2010).

All of those pitchers were older than the 26-year-old Harvey and had exceeded 200 innings earlier in their careers. Of course, the Mets note, Harvey had 17 months between his operation and a return to games.

"I think Matt Harvey is going to step up and show everybody in New York, everybody in baseball, that he's as tough as the persona he puts on," manager Terry Collins said Monday. "I think [Tuesday] he's going to show everybody, ‘Look, I'm going to pitch. I'm going to pitch well. How much longer I'm going to pitch is undetermined at this time.' But he'll turn out tomorrow. … Matt Harvey is a competitor. As I told him the other day, ‘Look, the only way you're going to restore all the things you stand for is to walk out there on that mound and pitch like you can pitch. That's the only way you earn it. That's what got you here.'"

Captain David Wright, who spent four innings on the bench talking to Harvey on Sunday in Miami, said about their dialogue: "Private conversations remain private."

Still, Wright said, the innings flap has not created an issue in the clubhouse.

"It's not a distraction at all," Wright said. "We're talking about the Washington Nationals. There's nothing else to it. I think it's a much bigger story outside this clubhouse than it is in the clubhouse because nobody is talking about it. Quite frankly, we're going about our business.

"I could be wrong, but I don't think a lot of us follow, really, a lot of the things," Wright added. "I don't have social media. I don't check people's Twitters or Instagrams or anything. I don't really know the extent of everything that goes on all the time. But I think that guys in here, if they do check it and do know what's going on, they do a nice job of not letting it be known, because it's business as usual."

WASHINGTON -- Veteran right-hander Tim Stauffer has been promoted to the New York Mets to offset the loss of reliever Carlos Torres, who has a left calf strain, and could be out for 1 or 2 weeks.

Stauffer, 33, was selected over Dillon Gee because Stauffer has experience out of the bullpen.

Stauffer has pitched parts of 10 seasons in the majors, including going 1-0 with a 6.60 ERA with the Minnesota Twins this season.

He was signed by the Mets to a minor league deal on Aug. 1 and went 4-1 with a 2.48 ERA in eight starts with Las Vegas.

The Mets promoted outfielder Darrell Ceciliani and placed him on the 60-day disabled list to clear the 40-man roster spot for Stauffer. The Mets recently performed similar roster maneuvers with Wilfredo Tovar and Jack Leathersich to open 40-man roster spots.

WASHINGTON -- New York Mets right-hander Bartolo Colon has been named the National League Player of the Week.

Colon shut out the Miami Marlins on Sunday to extend his scoreless streak to 25 innings. He became the oldest pitcher in franchise history to toss a shutout.

Colon, 42, is the oldest major league pitcher with a scoreless streak of that length since Hoyt Wilhelm went 25 1/3 scoreless innings in 1967 at age 44.

Mets granted offseason waiver for Yoenis Cespedes contract bidding

WASHINGTON -- The New York Mets are no longer under a strict time constraint to re-sign outfielder Yoenis Cespedes.

General manager Sandy Alderson said Tuesday that Major League Baseball and the Players' Association have agreed to allow the Mets to remain a bidder throughout the offseason.

Because Cespedes came from Cuba with significant professional experience, his original agent negotiated a clause in his contract that would make the outfielder a free agent after four years in the majors rather than the customary six years.

However, the mechanism that makes Cespedes a free agent calls for him to be released within five days of the completion of the World Series.

MLB rules prohibit a team from re-signing a player until the following May 15 if he has been released at that point. So, barring this waiver, the Mets effectively would have been eliminated from re-signing Cespedes once open bidding begins five days after the World Series.

MLB and the union signed off last week on making Cespedes eligible to be re-signed by the Mets for the entire offseason, since it was in the best interest of Cespedes and the team.

Alderson said the move is not unprecedented, noting that the Kansas City Royals had the right to re-sign Nori Aoki last offseason despite a similar release clause in his contract.

"It's been signed off by all the parties, including the union and Major League Baseball," Alderson said.

Alderson would not address the likelihood of re-signing Cespedes.

Because Cespedes was traded in-season, the Mets still will be unable to make him a qualifying offer as a vehicle to gain a draft pick if he signs elsewhere.

Cespedes has been invaluable to the Mets since being acquired from the Detroit Tigers on July 31 for minor league right-hander Michael Fulmer.

Cespedes entered Tuesday's game against the Washington Nationals hitting .311 with 13 homers and 31 RBIs in 34 games.

That's excellent lets hope the Mets give him a fair offer. He stated a few weeks back that he likes the team and the guys on it so lets hope with a fair offer and him feeling comfortable that means he stays.

We GOTTA resign this guy. He obviously loves playing here and he's the big outfield bat we've been craving for years.

other than DW's HR in the 2nd......the 10 pitch Flores AB in the 5th was nice, even though he smoked the ball and made an out....Zimmy's PC is up to 85 now.....could be crucial the next inning or 2.
