I hear ya...I'll just be waiting for it all to go horribly wrong sometime in the next 8weeks

There's always that possibility...but I'm gonna remain optimistic.
The veterans they picked up will help, coupled w/ a favorable schedule and the overall teams health so far has me believing more than I do already...

Bryce Harper gets snippy after Mets take sole possession of first
Bryce Harper gets snippy after Mets take sole possession of first - Mets Blog - ESPN

Washington Nationals phenom Bryce Harper did not appear in much of a mood to discuss the standings after the New York Mets took over sole possession of first place in the National League East.

"I don't give a crap what the Mets are doing. Or Dodgers or Giants or Texas or anybody," Harper told D.C. media after the Nats lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks, 6-4, Monday at Nationals Park, according to The Washington Post's James Wagner. "I know what kind of team we are."

MIAMI -- (8/4)

FIRST PITCH: There was no letdown a day after completing a euphoric sweep of the Washington Nationals. And now the New York Mets are alone in first place in the NL East.

Jonathon Niese looks to up the Mets’ winning streak to five games on Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. ET at Marlins Park. Niese (5-9, 3.63 ERA) opposes left-hander Brad Hand (1-2, 5.12). Hand steps into the Miami Marlins’ rotation with the trade of Dan Haren to the Chicago Cubs.

With the Mets facing a southpaw, Juan Lagares is likely to get the start in center field.

TUESDAY’S NEWS REPORTS:

  • Michael Conforto produced his first major league homer, Yoenis Cespedes had three doubles and four RBIs and Bartolo Colon won for the first time since June 12 as the Mets routed the Marlins, 12-1, on Monday. Coupled with Washington’s loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Mets opened a one-game lead atop the division. Colon rebounded from the shortest start by a Mets pitcher this season. He took a scoreless effort into the eighth inning. Cespedes produced his first four RBIs as a Met. Read game recaps in the Post, Daily News, Times, Newsday, Record and at NJ.com and MLB.com.

  • Nats phenom Bryce Harper did not seem to be in much of a mood to talk about the division race after Monday’s loss in D.C.

  • Four weeks after being diagnosed with a lat strain, Steven Matz resumed throwing on Monday. He tossed a baseball on flat ground at 60 feet at the team’s complex in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The Mets are eyeing early September for the rookie southpaw’s return. That would reduce the innings of the other young starters enough so that their playoff availability should not be compromised. Read more in the Post and Newsday.

  • The Mets must release Cespedes after the postseason if he is not signed to an extension by then. Once released, the Mets will be unable to re-sign him to a major league deal until May 15 -- effectively ending any potential courtship.

  • Lucas Duda and Noah Syndergaard were named co-NL players of the week on Monday. It marked the first Mets co-winners since David Wright and Jose Reyes shared the honor back in June 2006.

  • Sunday’s Mets-Nats game was the most watched Mets game on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball against an opponent other than the Yankees since Tom Glavine’s 300th win at Wrigley Field on Aug. 5, 2007.

  • Zack Wheeler visited teammates Monday. “At the end of the day I wanted to stay a New York Met,” said Wheeler, referring to nearly getting traded to the Milwaukee Brewers last week. Read more in the Journal and Daily News.

  • The Mets have the weakest remaining schedule of any team in the majors, Jared Diamond writes in the Journal. Their opponents’ collective winning percentage is .455. The Nationals, though, have the second-lowest opponent winning percentage, at .470.

  • Columnist Kevin Kernan in the Post looks at the swift transformation of the Mets’ lineup.

  • Read more on Conforto’s first major league homer in the Post and at MLB.com.

  • Oddsmakers still do not care for the Mets’ chances of reaching the postseason, Zach Braziller writes in the Post.

  • Brian Costa in the Journal suggests that the existence of fewer elite teams in baseball is giving the Mets a chance to contend.

  • Kostya Kennedy at SI.com looks at the love-hate relationship between the Mets and their fans.

  • Dillon Gee tossed his second straight complete game as Las Vegas beat Tacoma, 7-2. Eudor Garcia had a game-tying two-run single in the seventh and Savannah rallied for a 7-4 win at Rome. Alex Palsha allowed a two-out triple in the ninth, but held on for his 10th save as Brooklyn edged Lowell, 7-6. Read the full minor league recap here.
