No surprise, Texans don't use franchise tag | CSN Houston
The 3 p.m. CT deadline for using the franchise tag came and went on Monday with the Texans standing still.
The Texans didn't use a franchise or transition tag on Monday, which was expected. It actually would have been quite surprising if they did use one. They haven't used a franchise tag since 2009 and didn't have any strong candidates for one this offseason.
The Saints used their franchise tag on TE Jimmy Graham. The Panthers used theirs on DE Greg Hardy. The Redskins tagged Brian Orakpo and the Jets tagged kicker Nick Folk.
The Browns used a transition tag on center Alex Mack and the Steelers used a transition tag on OLB Jason Worilds.
Free agency starts on March 11 at 3 p.m. but teams can begin negotiations with agents on March 8.
Some of the notable Texans free agents are Antonio Smith, Wade Smith, Garrett Graham, Earl Mitchell, Ben Tate, Darryl Sharpton and Joe Mays.
