No Suh, would you sign Fairley?

If Suh doesn't get franchised and leaves via free agency do we use the cap space to go after Fairley?

Up until his injury he was having arguably the best season of his career. And with no starting DTs back signing Fairley makes the need to draft a DT in the first round diminishes.

So without Suh do we bring Fairley back?

It was his contract year, so I say no....Once signed he will regress.....I get that leaves us in a bind, but would rather have a guy that has to prove something for less......Fairley doesn't have the work ethic and DTs with chips on there shoulders can be found.

I would resign Fairley whether or not the Lions can retain Suh. I don't imagine he will be all that expensive, and his potential is still through the roof.

It's the nFL I am sure some GM will think Fairley is about to hit his prime. So I don't think he would be cheap but without Suh the Lions would pay a premium.

It would look stupid to tag him after declining the 5th yr option. I would do it if no Suh. It puts him on another play for contract season. 9 million is a hefty tag for Fairley, but him and Mosley (FA also I believe) will suffice a season.
This idea is on the premise that the Lions actually bring in the right pieces with Suh's money. Scary thought at times even with some of the decent FA signings they have had.

If we don't have Suh we will have a ton of cash. I would not resign Fairly unless it was for small money and that is not likely as someone will take a chance on him. I would go out and get Knighton and resign Mosely and then draft one.

Whether they resign Suh or tag him, I think that leaves Fairley as the odd man out. I'd like to see him stay though. Guess it depends on that knee. Knee issues and big guys w weight issues don't mix well.

Yes, at the right number. Given his history, I'd want something that had heavy performance incentives, and an average number of no more than $8MM per year at high play levels, or no guaranteed money or signing bonus. I'd be concerned that with a fat contract we'd get Haynesworth even if he does stay healthy.

When healthy and motivated Fairley is one of the leagues best DTs. I'd like to have him back with Suh if possible and if we can't keep Suh I'd want Fairley even more. I would only sign him for 2 years though. You give this guy a 5 year deal and you probably won't see production again until year 4 or 5.

Absolutely. Easy deal to structure with low cost out. The deal would read as big but not even close to what he earns if he doesn't bring it. Nice 3rd year option bonus is all that it takes. basically a contract year for him.

Regress from what? Injured to more injured?

2 years for for $10 million total MAX. Any more money or years is a waste.

Fairley being the man on the line could motivate him to raise his game. He has been in Suh's shadow the last few years and has had a serious maturity problem.

I think this last year he realized he needed to get his shit together....right about the time Mayhew didn't pick up his option.

Fairley is a legit NFL DT and with the cash Detroit could make the line good my only concern is bad FA signings by Mayhew.
