Windows 7, I think the problem is arising when the computer wakes from hibernate, it says the ethernet cable isn't plugged in. I have to reboot everything to get it to work.. any idea how to fix this shit?

Network Connections by clicking the Start button, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type adapter, and then, under Network and Sharing Center, click View network connections.

Right-click the connection, and then click Properties.

Click the Networking tab, and then click Configure.

Click the Power Management tab, clear the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power check box, and then click OK.

You might also try "Link Speed & Duplex" in the adapter's Properties>Advanced from "Auto Negotiation" to "100 Mbps Full Duplex".

I tried all that, didn't work. I found on another forum where it said to uncheck IPv6, and that seems to have done it. Is that going to screw anything else up?.. I am getting 90 down 6 up (paying for 75/6) so the speed seems good.

Sorry I know enough about computers to be dangerous.. LOL.

I refuse to support Apple, and I don't feel like fucking around with Linux to get it to work right. I want to tell time, not make a watch.

No, ISP don't use yet (well none that I know of). Windows assigns one just because it can. So does Linux now. Windows and Linux are notorious for dropping network connections when coming out of sleep mode. Hell, I just turn off sleep or hibernate mode and let the monitor go blank after 10 minutes.

It's still messed up but not as bad, changed my ethernet card settings to
Ethernet 10/100/1000Mb Half/Full Duplex Auto-Negotiation if that doesnt work, I think this modem is messed up. It doesnt look like they gave me a new one.

In Windows 7 the icon in the systray can help you diagnose this. If there is a yellow triangle icon the network connection is not communicating with the modem, if it is a red X the card is communicating with the modem but seeing nothing from internet implying an outside failure of some type. For the latter you can try disconnecting the PC from the modem, turn off the modem and wait 20-30 seconds and repower the modem. Give the modem time to synch completely and reconnect the PC. If then the same failure occurs again, I'd contact Comcast.

I get the red x.. but when I diagnose it, it tells me the ethernet cable isn't plugged in. I've tried 2 cables now, when it happens it looks like the green light on the back of the computer goes out even though the cable is plugged in.. reset the modem and everything works again.... I am half tempted to just get a wireless dongle and say the hell with it.

How old is the PC and are you using on board NIC? I've have had on board NICs fail due to shoddy soldering. Might be cheaper to buy an add in NIC instead of a wireless dongle, plus the speed will be better.

It's a shitty Emachine.. on board NIC, I guess. I'm getting like 50mbps down over wifi so it shouldn't matter that much.

Would this thing work?

Does that light being out, kind of point the finger at the NIC?

That looks good, especially if router/modem is capable of N-band 5 Ghz.

Yes, the lights are there to tell you both the status and speed of the connection. Should be two lights, both should be green.

Just one more quick question. I had verizon DSL for years and never had a problem. I got Cable last Friday and this started happening. Does that make any sense>?

Honestly no. But stranger things have happened. When the Internet is working are both lights green on the back, and do they stay green while you are using the PC then? If so, I would still try resetting the modem as I mentioned earlier.

That sounds more like a modem problem than a NIC problem...do you know what the lights are on the back of the PC when you see the red X? If they are still green, it's definitely not the NIC.
