That wouldn't be fun. If it shakes out as:

Greene - Lars
Severson - Merrill
Gelly - Moore

Extra: Schlemko

Have to wonder if we're better off letting Moore leave. Since there would be two seasons between now and then, we'll see what happens. Maybe the decision will be much more apparent. Maybe Greene starts to show his age and he's not protected.

No chance they would protect moore and expose Merrill...not a concern

I agree. At the same time, it is also two years away. Who the hell knows what guys looks like between now and then.

Well like you said it's two years from now when these young d men will be coming into their own. The Devils will obviously go with the first option. 1 goalie 5 d and 9 forwards protected. Andy Greene would be the obvious choose to leave unprotected. That's a nice salary off the books and the team should be entering their prime on the back line. Kinkaid if he plays as good as he did last year might get scooped up too. Kinda nice having that black wood kid

No that's not the obvious choice if you don't want him he has trade value. You'd expose your 6th D man whoever that is. Was at the scrimmage yesterday. Blackwood gave up a very soft goal near the end of the 2nd but was excellent in the OT

He's going to be 35 when this draft happens making 5 million a year. You let him walk if an expansion team is willing to take him. No one is trading anything of value for Greene 2 years from now sorry.

I 100% agree with this. Greene will start to decline eventually in the next few years. That doesn't mean that he won't be a good player, but no way do you protect him and lose a 24-26 y/o defenseman. Or if you worry that he'll get poached you trade him at the deadline if we're clearly not making the playoffs. Greene, even if we needed to retain some salary because he's getting older and will still have a couple of years left, could defintely get a good piece for the Devils.

Ages in 2 Years.

Gelinas - 26
Larsson - 24
Merrill - 25
Moore - 26
Severson - 23
Greene - 34

Also, I really, really hope that Mackenzie Blackwood is nowhere near the NHL until after this process is over haha. Kinkaid has proven to be a decent backup, but Blackwood has the tools to be our guy when Cory is at the end of his current deal. Don't want to lose that.

This deadline will be really interesting to see what Shero does. If we are out of it will he sell whatever he can? Two years from now Greene can be a final piece to a cup team which maybe brings back a 2nd and a prospect. I would def do that deal if it came around.

Kincaid played it smart by staying here this summer. He knows he will get 15-20 starts in a bad team meaning he will get work. This expansion comes around maybe he gets claimed

Last night at the briefing Shero said it's entirely up to the players what he does at deadline and off season 9what else is he gonna say we're gonna mail it in...). He did mention (which we all know) that we have a ton of cap space that would give him a lot of flexibility this year and next. He said in building for the future are strengths are goaltending, young D and cap space.
