The Braves paid him A LOT of money to patrol RF for them and so far this is what Nick has done:

.300 .394 .356 in 183 AB he has 10 doubles, no triples, no HR, and 13 RBI with 27BB and 30K. He has 2 Assists and no errors.

I liked Markakis when he was with the Orioles, but I don't think this performance and his performance over his stay with Baltimore was worth $11 million a year.

We won't know if its a good/bad deal for at least 2 years. He is hitting well though, maybe that NL pitching?

It was a good deal for the Orioles to move on from him. He just doesn't offer what you need most from the OF for the kind of money he gets. If we take all the nostalgia away he is a slap-hitting, at times high average, and high OBP hitter with relatively no speed (SB's) and has a strong arm in RF, decent range, and usually makes all the plays that come to him. Is that worth over $10 million per year? Nope.

Defiantly not worth 10 Million.

Would you go after Jason Heyward this off season? Only will be 26 in August, but just hitting .250 this year. Not much power either.

I rather they really try and sign Upton.

Just for the hell of it I wanted to compare his season to Young's.

D Young. 36 for 119 for a .303 average, 2 hr, 5 2b, 13rbi,0 steal, 4 walks for a 331 obs. salary $2,250,000 WAR 0.6
Markakis 54 for 185 for a .292 average, 0 HR, 10 2b, 13rbi,1 steal, 27 walks for a .385. salary $11,000,000 WAR 0.2

I think we definitely miss his presence in the clubhouse, but his price tag just didn't make sense.

Not to mention Young leads the AL in OF assists...

I definitely like Markakis but not for the price he got. He was always an average hitter but I think that we miss his defense more than anything. From what I've seen, nobody that has played RF for us at home so far this year knows the way the ball bounces out there better than Markakis.

I doubt that they will sign Upton. This team seems to try to rely more on the diamonds in the rough when it comes to trades or free agency (barring Ubaldo). They will probably try to use a lot of the money freed up to try to re up Tillman because I think that Davis and Wieters are both gone at the end of the year since Boras is going to command a lot of money for the both of them.

Well Tillman has been awful so far this year so if he doesn't turn it around they shouldn't extend him yet.

They have a ton of money coming off the books after this season that I hope they go after a good hitter. The market is to good but there's Upton, Cespedes, and Heyward.

I can agree with that about Tillman. He needs to be worked with to find out what the difference between what he did last year and this year.

I'd definitely go for Upton and Cespedes before Heyward. I just don't think that we'll get any of them though but would love to be wrong about that.

I agree I doubt we sign a top guy but if they want to get over 500 and back into the playoffs I think they need to sign a top guy or 2 for the offense. We don't have much in the minors for hitting.

O's get rid of a ton of guys and money after this year;

Matt Wieters $8.3 Million
Chris Davis $12
Alejandro De Aza $5
Steve Pearce $3.7
Delmon Young $2.25
Wei-Yin Chen $4.75
Bud Norris $8.8
Tommy Hunter $4.65
Darren O’Day $4.25
Wesley Wright $1.7

Future Payroll Obligations By Team - MLB Trade Rumors

Says we have $44 million on the books for 2016 $44 2017 $19 2018.

Our team salary this year is $115,886,000. So that's a $77 million different pre arbitration for next year.

Of that above mentioned group the only two I would keep are Chen who is a very good starter and Matt Wieters. If Joseph breaks out and/or this Sisco kid comes through we have an opening at 1B now that Davis and Pearce are gone. As big as Wieters is the move to 1B was talked about when he was drafted. To save his knees and to keep him around longer a move to 1B would be needed. I think his bat plays at 1B and he might even hit better when he's not getting worn out 150 games a year behind the plate.

As for the free agent crop of outfielders:

Jason Heyward: He will command big money just because he is one of the top talents. To me he's another Markakis. Good defense, around the teens for homers, and MAYBE he hits for a high average and high OBP. I wouldn't spend a lot of money on him just like I didn't want to carry Markakis' contract. Heyward has pretty extreme splits and doesn't hit lefties very well at all.

Justin Upton: Between Heyward and Upton I would go for Upton. He brings the power element to the table and he can hit for a high average and carries a good OBP. The problem is that he is a National League Bat and sometimes they don't do as well in the AL. Upton hits lefties and righties both very well.

Yeonis Cespedes: He is already 29, but I think I like him the most out of the three. He is already an AL Bat so you don't have to worry about if his bat plays in this league. He brings power, he hits a TON of doubles, he is primarily a LF'er but also plays CF, and I am sure he can play RF, he has a cannon for an arm. Thing is that he doesn't walk a lot and his OBP isn't all that great. As long as he's cranking out Homers, Extra Bases, and driving in runs though I can live with his OBP not being so great. Cespedes hits for a higher average against righties (.270 vs. .252), but he slugs them at nearly the same clip (.466 vs RHP, .467 vs LHP).

I think we need to look for guys that don't have outrageous splits. That way you don't HAVE to substitute a guy out of the order simply because he can't hit lefties at all or vice-versa.
