With MDZ's arbitration hearing scheduled for 7/20, what do you think he'll get?

I'm expecting 1 year - 5.25ish.

I expect MDZ is looking for 5ish and long term, and Hexy doesn't want to do long term. He's fine with the number, but not with the length. Hence arbitration. The result is typically a 1 year deal which is perfect for Hextall.

Yeah the team can walk away if the arbitrator rules in favor of MDZ and it's over 3.75 or whatever the number is for this year - but I think you're right that it may be in that $ range

I'll say 4-5 million

I was thinking $4.5-5, so we're all in the same ballpark.

I definitely think the discrepancy is based primarily on length. If everything goes to plan, MDZ isn't needed beyond 2016-17. By then at least 2 of Morin, Ghost, Sanheim, Hagg, and Provorov will be in the NHL. Probably 3 or 4. You already have MacDonald under contract past then. There's no space to have another guy (MDZ) locked in already.

In the meantime, you use the cap space you do have to stay competitive. Which is why I'd be perfectly fine with almost any number that kept the flyers under the cap, as long as it's a one year deal.

35th in the NHL in points per game by a defender is pretty good. I expect that will balloon is number a bit. Plus, defensemen just get PAID these days.

Justin Schultz got $3.9 today. Considering MDZ isn't a complete tire fire, I'm thinking $4.5+. I'll lock in at $4.5 for the record.

True but that was one year arbitration may offer a bridge deal to prove it. Either way I wouldn't be pissed if it's over 4 M.

We just got a 25 year old defenseman that was on a 40 point pace behind Berube locked up relatively cheap for two years. Good deal.

With 8 d-men on one-way deals, who gets traded or do they try to stash Manning back in the AHL and risk losing him to a waiver claim? Obviously MacDonald is the guy I'd most like to see get moved, but that's not happening. Nick Schultz may actually be the most likely candidate. I don't see them trading Streit, or Schenn with the brother connection. Gudas is probably just as good as Schultz for a lot less salary. Manning could be part of the future D core. Medvedev? Well, I just don't see him being moved, can't really say why.

I think Manning will get stashed. I think he'll be an AHL/NHL tweener guy for most of his career.

I think that will be the fall back plan if they can't find a taker for one of the other guys. Manning has played well in both of his stints with the big club. I think they'd like to keep the 2 cheap guys, Gudas and Manning, if at all possible. What do you think the chances are of Manning being claimed if they were to try to send him down? I'd think it's better than 50/50 he gets claimed.

I guess I was close arbitration can't always go top end so this is fair and should motivate MDZ.
