Don't forget Whoudini!

Talk about having a message.

I owned a cassette of Escape that I played until it started to drag.

"Do not touch my TV, my DVD, my stereo, my dual-deck VCR. Do not touch my old school, my new school, my slow jams, my party jams, my happy rap, and you better not touch... [voice breaks] My James Brown."

If you end a sentence with "is better than Tupac", there are only about 3 or maybe 4 names I would say you're entitled to your opinion. Anything other than is blasphemous.

The dude who had hits like "Hit em up" and "Ambitions of a Ridah" also made hits like "Changes" "Life Goes on" "Dear Mama". You won't see any rappers today being able to do shit like that.

Lyrically, even if you open it up to all genres, there aren't too many people you can end a sentence with "is better than Tupac." He was transcendent. I wouldn't put him in the same sentence as Bob Dylan, but I could entertain an argument for ranking him above guys like Lennon/McCartney? I'm sure many will disagree with that kind of ranking but Tupac's lyrics and music contain an authenticity that so often escapes main stream music.

Am I gonna get castrated for saying the 80s/90s rap was way better than today?

NWA, Ice Cube, Dre, 2 pac, etc etc.. Ice Cube would stick Kanye in a locker.

Haven't heard Jay-Z's 14th album or whatever it is but i bet it's still pretty decent.

I know a guy who knows a guy that knows Beanie Sigel who says Beanie once had to console a weeping Kanye that had just gotten threatened by some random dude. Not sure if it's true but I like to believe it is.

One of the biggest reasons I listened to 90's rap was because it was the inverse of pop.

Then in 2003,
  • Lose Yourself won an Academy Award.
  • In Da Club blew up and invoked every rapper to make booty shaking club hits with no intelligible lyrics.
  • Outkast dropped the first "rap" album to ever win the Album of the Year Grammy.
2003 was the year rap transitioned into a subgenre of pop, therefore I consider THAT the year rap died.

Just goes to show you can take the Boyz out da hood.

I give props to Dudes like Cube that had the common sense to leave all that Hood shit behind.

The ones who can't end up like Tupac, Suge Knight, Javaris Crittenton and Aaron Hernandez.
its called growing up. i was late to the party myself.
