I hate these copyright suits, to be honest. There are literally millions of songs and only 12 notes; of course you're going to get some songs that are very similar. I might make an exception if it's over the top plagiarism and not just, "sounds pretty similar".

And yeah, Spirit are a great band, especially - Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus.

I'll do my best to honor Spirit and Led Zeppelin, by trying to never listen to Taurus or Stairway again.

(Id had enough of StH by the time I was 12. Overload.)

Blasphemy!!

If you don't like Stairway to Heaven, you don't like music.
Lawrence Welk maybe...

And a one, and a two..

One positive about the law suit, is now many more people became fans of Spirit who previously may have never heard of them or their music.

I've been a fan of theirs for nearly 45 yrs.

Me too. They seemed to have a brief moment in the sun and then they faded away..

Eh, hard to deny Zeppelin's talent, but it's like nails on a chalkboard to me. High pitched screams and I honestly can't tell if the singer is a man or a woman by listening. Ain't my style.

And I'd never heard of them. Weird.

I thought you could hear a "similarity" of sorts between the tunes but they went in different directions. Zeppelin's tune went up. Spirit's tune ended lower than it started.

In the end, why did it take so long for this to come to a head? I'd heard the Spirit guy said he wasn't interested in pursuing this more than a few years back.

And this whole thing was pushed by his estate. Which makes me think cash grab pure and simple.

I'd say it's hard to say one influenced the other if Page wasn't aware of the former.

But they did tour together in the late 60's early 70's and Page admitted to owned the Spirit LPs.

Either way I'm not fussed about Zep getting off the hook.

They were the first concert I ever went to, summer of 1970. Plant belted out Immigrant Song to open the show.

His "high pitched screams" were very, very cool... Got LZ III for Xmas that year.

I'm not saying they're not talented, but when you like Waylon and Willie, Zep just doesn't do it for you.

I do like Robert Plant's duets with Allison Kraus though.

I figured it was country you had ranked highly.

I saw Plant with his bluegrass Band of Joy 3 summers ago. A great and very un-Zep concert.

The beginning snippet sounded the same... To me anywaya. I think the idea of claiming a riff can be copyrighted is pretty ridiculous in general. I just liked Spirit.

As much of a rocker that I am, I agree with you and am also looking forward to Steven Tyler's solo country efforts.

Two of the greatest of all time, Johnny and Elvis were never tied to one genre either.

With the right amount of booze in me, I might just break out in a violent mosh-style dance to this shit, irrespective of where I am standing upon hearing it.
