Kovalchuk's Termination

It's my understanding that there are three possible outs for a team to jettison a player's contract without a trade:

1. Buyout - player still gets paid
2. Player breach of contract - player can be terminated with no penalty to the team
   
3. Mutual termination - both team and player agree to terminate

• All reports say it's straight termination; no buyout.
• No reports indicate a breach of contract. In fact, reports have been quite positive on Kovalchuk's professionalism throughout the season.
• All news outlets are reporting that the Kings terminated Kovalchuk but no reports I have found stated Kovalchuk agreed to it.

Does anyone know if Ilya Kovalchuk agreed to terminate his contract with Kings or are there other contract outs I'm unaware of?
