It's my understanding that there are three possible outs for a team to jettison a player's contract without a trade:
- Buyout - player still gets paid
- Player breach of contract - player can be terminated with no penalty to the team
- Mutual termination - both team and player agree to terminate
- All reports say it's straight termination; no buyout.
- No reports indicate a breach of contract. In fact, reports have been quite positive on Kovalchuk's professionalism throughout the season.
- All news outlets are reporting that the Kings terminated Kovalchuk but no reports I have found stated Kovalchuk agreed to it.
