We are bumping up our keepers up from 5 to 7 this season. I'm torn on my final keeper slot. I can keep Jansen in the 4th round. Very reliable top end closer but giving up a early pick for him. Or go the cheaper route in Diaz who doesn't have the track record. But 21st round for a top flight closer would be great. Or I can keep Renfroe in the 21st round. Many question marks on him but a lot of power potential. These are my other keepers.

Harper - 1st Round
Kershaw - 2nd Round
Goldy - 5th Round
Arenado - 20th Round
Turner - 22nd Round
Correa - 23rd Round

First off, those keepers are unfair!!! Congrats to that!!

I would keep Diaz in the 21st. Jansen is a top 3 closer BUT closers generally don't get drafted in the earlier rounds. So his value in the 4th is not that much. Edwin Diaz has the potential to be a top 10 closer. So you have the good fallback option.

But with those keepers, you really can't go wrong. Unless you keep renfroe!!

I'd keep Jansen. Pricy, but worth it, I think.

Diaz is really good.

The true value of this selection must include the opportunity cost of what you give up with the draft pick.

In other words, you either get Diaz + a 4th or Jansen + a 21st. The gap between Ian and Jansen is not worth 17 rounds, IMO. Heck, it is even possible you might be able to redraft Jansen in round 3 or 4. I bet you don't get anything close to Diaz in round 21.

Good closers are pretty valuable in category leagues. The Ks and ratios are very helpful. Diaz has the upside to be the next jansen.

This is true.... I'm just not as sure... but certainly wouldn't argue this point.

How do you determine what round it costs you to keep someone? Is it based off where you drafted them the previous year? And if so, what happens if you want to keep someone consecutive years? Does it stay the same as long as you continuously keep said player?

It's based on whatever round you drafted them. They never change rounds. So I draft Turner as a prospect in the 22nd round and he becomes a stud I make out like a bandit. Now take Diaz or Renfroe they were WW adds last season. So they can be kept at the latest available draft pick. Having 22nd and 23rd round keepers they could become 21st round keepers.

Throwing something else out. I could trade for Mazara as a 19th round keeper. Haven't ironed out any details but he wants a draft pick for him. I prefer having a bat over a closer. But his left/right splits do worry me a bit. I don't want a platoon player type of situation out of my keeper.

I like Jansen but I would go Diaz for the 21st here.

Agreed. Keep Diaz.

Renfroe isn't an awful option either. But 21st round for a stud closer is a good get.

For further reference, every mock I have done has Diaz going within 2 rounds of Jansen. THE value simply is too good to pass on with Diaz.
