"Richards is a physical safety who is also versatile, and he should fit in well in the Patriots' defense."

He is also called a "ball - hawk"

Will he cover?
Ken, help me out here.....

His team mates call him 'Coach". He's the smartest football player on the Stanford University team. Considering that even athletes must have a top 3% academic rank to get into STanford, I'd say this guy is pretty smart, a BB necessity.

He's physical, he's a defensive director and gives all secondary signals. He's always around the ball. Most important, he's a great blitzer.

Some teams will shy away from him in the draft because he's so smart. Defensive coaches could be intimidated by his game knowledge and understanding of offensive formations.......

So it looks like BB hits on his 2nd rounders about 50% of the time.

One other thing to consider, with Richards at safety, McCourty might be moved back to cornerback if BB feels that is needed.

We all know BB loves guys with intelligence. I think I heard Richards is a 3-time academic all-star in the Pac-12.

From the scouting report, looks like McCourty's job is safe. Chung on the other hand......

I think Richards is a SS to complement McCourty at FS. He is not going to let his receiver get off the line untouched. Jam it up!

I honestly can't see any player that BB should have taken over Richards. The only guy I might have considered would have been PJ Williams the cornerback, but he was known only because the CB class of 2015 sucks so bad. Belichick either sees or has seen something that he believes will beefit the Patriots immediately, be it on defense or special teams. Hell, Kiper was gushing over guys picked in the 6th and 7th rounds......

I would have taken Jaelen Strong. I'm not the coach. I agree with Ken though because WR was not as big a need as S and I think he was the best safety available - and very smart!

I actually like this kid. He played at a major college vs some high powered offenses (Organ, USC, ASU,) and was a 1st team all academic choice for like 3 yrs. I think the fact he is smart enough to learn the playbook and know where everyone was suppose to lineup, helps. He is tough, and can rush the QB. I think he eventually starts over Chung. I mean Sherman came from Stanford......
