He was pretty tough against Boston and NYY despite having losing records against both. He pitched well against the Angels and the Blue Jays (who absolutely own us).
Interestingly enough he struggled against SEA/OAK lol. I'm not too worried about it.
Thankfully we wouldn't have to face him again as he did quite a number against the Rangers last season (playoff game aside, he's struggled in the posteason the last 2 years for that matter, which does worry me).

Maybe we're just a tough offense in the playoffs because in 2008, he was pretty darn good in the postseason:

POSTSEASON PITCHING STATISTICS
SEASON GP GS CG SHO IP H R ER HR BB SO W L SV HLD BLSV WHIP ERA
2008 4 4 0 0 25.0 28 9 8 3 8 17 2 2 0 0 0 1.44 2.88

I really like Shields. He'd front this staff quite nicely. He shaved .4 off of his WHIP last season. Amazing turn around. Now the Rays are outstanding defensively so that had to help but a WHIP of 1.043 is really, really good.

Question is would TB turn him loose for a price the rangers are willing to pay?

I think if the guy is available, we'd have to do it. Otherwise overwhelm SF for Matt Cain. That guy is a champ! I don't think he allowed a run in the post season last year. Lincecum gets all the credit, but Cain was the man for them.

With the exception of 1B, the Rangers have all the pieces necessary to be a top caliber defense don't you think? Elvis has to play with better focus next season. About 10 of his errors were just absolutely ridiculous lack of focus nonchalant plays. Obviously Nelly's lack of great defense possibly cost the Rangers the series (still would been a tough play). Though his arm helped save the series against Detroit (so there you go).

I think the Rangers are terrific defensively for the most part. They could easily be the best team in the majors.

I guess I don't focus on that one play as much. I think what killed the Rangers was that they didn't play Ranger style baseball. They didn't pitch deep into games. They intentionally walked tons of guys. They walked tons of guys. Arguably their best starter throughout the season was stashed in the pen. They threw the ball over the middle of the plate over and over again. They made a lot of errors. Honestly, I didn't think they played all that well against Detroit which is why I thought the Cardinals were going to get them in 5.

Even with all that the Rangers were still three outs and 1 strike away on two different occasions. If Feliz or Feldman could have gotten one more strike nobody is even having this conversation.

Lets not put the blame on Feldman here, Oliver created THAT situation, Feldman was just trying to do damage control

The Price for Shields is going to be much higher than what was wanted for Garza, and remember Holland was part of the Garza asking price/offering. I'm sure a couple of our top end pitchers would be where there price would start, and then a field player for good measure. The price would be REALLY high for Shields. Not saying he isn't worth it, but you gotta balance the cost. Imagine if we had traded Holland for Garza and then he put up those shutout numbers. We would be destroying Daniels on this board.

some on here think TB will give him away to unload his contract but i think they will be looking for a max return on any trade. Are we willing to give up 2 or 3 of our top 10 prospects to get him, gutting our farm system?

1) have to agree that 1B looks to be the one spot that keeps us from having a top caliber defense. nothing against Moreland & Young but a Pujols, Fielder or Kotchman makes us 10X better.

2) Elvis could cut his errors in half with just a little more focus.

3) i think Nellie was hurt. he didn't move very well in games 6 & 7 and at one point he seemed to be limping. there were several times when he just didn't have the speed to make plays he normally would have

Max return is my thinking, his contract isnt costing them that much

Not his, but one of theirs. I read somewhere, I'll have to find it, about their situation. Apparently TPA came out and said they would have a salary cap of $50 million for next season. With their current salaries, arbitration figured as wins for the team, and without even having a player at all positions they are already looking at $42M...with those position holes to fill. The article said that Shields may not be the one moved, but Price would be. They say that because Price would bring back an even larger haul, will cost more, and still has a friendly contract arbitration wise.

they could be looking to unload both in that case and their view would be to load their minor system even more than it already is. they have the starting pitching to handle it with Matt Moore, Wade Davis, Jeremy Hellickson & Jeff Niemann plus Chris Archer Alex Cobb & Albert Suarez in the minor leagues but they would expect max return for either Price or Shields

well, James Shields has the biggest salary impact at 7M but Price opted out of the last year of his contract and filed for arbitration and is looking at probably 7-9M so it's a good probability that one or both will be traded
