So TY Hilton just signed a 5 yr/65 Million dollar deal, with 39 million guaranteed.

Dez Bryant's new contract is 5 yr/70 million with 45 million guaranteed.

I can't help but think that Indy WAY overpaid

Wait to see the details. The headline means nothing. If that 5th year has a salary of like $17M he'll never see it unless he keeps improving...

I love TY and happen to think he is going to be even better going forward. No, he isn't worth anywhere near what Dez is, but if you start rolling out the other WR contracts it doesn't look so bad - Wallace, Jackson, Maclin, Fitz. Remember with inflation the most recently paid is often the higher paid...

in certain offenses yes.

hes a 20 yard/catch guy in the playoffs the last 2 years.

overall hes a 100 yard a game guy in the postseason, he steps it up.

problem hes 5-10' like i have hair. hes super tiny. dez can beat up DB's. hilton just burns by them.

No. $65M with $39M guaranteed is absolutely ridiculous. He's in a pass happy offense and only mustered 780 or so yards outside of his division. I don't know if he didn't play the last game but the prior 5 division games he was getting like 100+ every game against the lowly Titans, Texans, and Jaguars. He killed one outing with over 200 yards against the Texans.

Outside of LOL Cleveland and a LITTLE bit of Cincy he was very mediocre. $13M per year for a 5'9" WR? WTF are the Colts smoking?

Once details were released I immediately graded it a D+/C-. Hilton is a talented player and definitely a good target for Luck but I can't justify this kind of money for that type of WR.

Golden Tate is a similar target (not a HUGE red zone threat, but definitely a receiver who makes plays) and signed for LESS than half of Hilton's contract.

Is he worth it? Yes.

Why? Because that is AT LEAST what someone else would have paid him on the open market and it is better to pay him that then lose him because you aren't going to be able to replace him at that cheap of a cost (when you factor in loss of production, what you pay the FA to replace him and what you spend in draft picks when the B level free agent you signed doesn't live up to expectations).

Hilton is a great route runner that can take the top off a defense on any play.

Tate really was nothing more than a slot type of WR that catches short passes and has good YAC ability. The the vast majority of his work on passes thrown less than 5 yards down the field.

Two completely different players.

Players like Hilton open up the passing game for other WR's by creating space and scaring defenses. Players like Tate don't.

Not arguing any of that. I agree with all the analysis you pointed out. That said, it was still far too much money for that type of WR IMO (all opinion, Hilton may become one of the best WRs in the NFL in the coming years, but there's a LONG list of WRs I'd pay that money too before Hilton and Bryant/Thomas are good benchmarks).

Not even close. TY is more in the 2nd tier of the WR level.

I don't think you want to make that argument when he has basically averaged 100 yards per game in the playoffs

And Tate is nowhere near the player TY is

You are exactly right. Did the Colts overpay? Absolutely, but not by much IMO, however, somebody would have gave him that kind of money. So is it worth the risk?

And the fact that he's already been working with Luck for a few years. Keep those weapons together and booyah.

It's funny how many people underrate speed in the passing game.

It's not 5/$65 versus 5/$70, it's 6/$66.5 versus 5/$70.

That's $11 mil versus $14 mil with an extra year of control for Indy. Starting in 2016, that will likely still put him at the bottom or outside the top 10 WR average salaries once Green, Brown, & Jones get their new deals. Which puts him right in line with his production.

It is an extension yes. But the new money is 5/65.
