Is Melvin Upton Jr(BJ Upton) the worst free agent signing of all time?

If extensions count, then Howard's easily in the conversation. He's batted .233/.309/.412 (98 OPS+) and has cost the Phillies numerous runs with his defense and baserunning, not to mention he missed most of the 2012 and 2013 seasons. -1.5 bWAR over the span of his contract so far.

I'd rather have Howard than Melvin at this point. At least Howard can hit the ball a mile when he gets ahold of it.

his power numbers are nowhere remotely close to what they were in his best years. He has a .178 ISO (isolated power) over the last three years, which is merely above average. Among qualified 1B, however, he was ranked 25th (out of 38). And his power numbers have been falling closer and closer to league average.

Even if Howard were a slightly better player than Upton (not sure, but both have been pretty bad), Howard's contract is still much worse. 5/$72.5M vs 5/$125M.

Didn't realize it had gotten that bad for Howard. Possibly the worst contract extension of all time.

A lot of Yankees could go on this list:

CC
Texeirable
A-Rod
Burnout

But at least these 3 brought us a title and have had good years in the pinstripes. A-Rod will only be an annoyance for 3 more years. Now this new batch of Yankees might end up with Melvin.

5/75 isn't even a big contract.

Good point. I think any player with a ring during said contract needs to be removed from the discussion.

Some Giants fans kept saying they couldn't wait for the "Zito era" to end. I kept saying "Why? It was the most successful era in Giants history".

Without doing any research, my gut tells me yes.

5 years, 75 million, the biggest contract the Braves had ever given an outfielder, and what do we get in return?

2013: .184 avg, 9 HR, 26 RBIs, .268 OBP, 151 strikeouts
2014: .208 avg, 12 HR, 35 RBI, .287 OBP, 171 strikeouts

This jackass is costing us 15 million a year.

I challenge you to find a worse free agent signing in the history of MLB.

Please see Rodriguez, Alex.

Please see Rodriguez, Alex.

A-Rod has been a big time distraction lately, but he did have some huge years in a Yankees uniform. 2 MVP seasons and was a big part of the 2009 World Series win.

Any 10+ year contract is eventually gonna bite the team in the ass, but at least at one point the Yankees were getting something for their dollar.

The Braves have got nothing from Justin's retarded older brother.

Plus, wasn't A-Rod traded for and then extended?

A Rod also killed them in the playoffs for a few years. After game 3 against the Sox in 2004, the 2005 playoffs, the 2006 playoffs and the 2007 playoffs the Yanks 25 mil a year clean up hitter has exactly 1 RBI.

I'm referring to the extension.

But, he did at least put up big regular season numbers to help the Yanks reach the playoffs.

And He wasn't really a free agent signing.

He was the master of the 3 run hr to put them up 10-2. He was however unstoppable in the 2009 playoffs. Despite good numbers he and Giambi left a Guatamalan village on base in 2008 and they didn't make the playoffs.

When he opted out in 2007 he was a free agent signing

Post 2007 and you have a better argument for sure, but the 2009 playoffs alone make him better than Upton. The Yankees didn't have to pay him while he was suspended did they?

You make a good point. They did save the 25 mil last year and 2009 he had I think 18 RBI's in the playoffs.
