do you have to take when you reach a certain age? I know you do when you turn 16 or something, but I figured it might be unnecessary after a certain age

You shouldn't have to take the test over. The older you get the more experienced you are.

I am not sure of what kind of hunting that you do, if it is just you hunting in a tree stand on 30 acres to yourself that's one thing. But if you hunt in a group setting using dogs where you have to be pretty mobile or hunt on public land - I think it is a must. It only takes one mistake and you or someone is toast.
