The Charleston Gazette | Mitch Vingle: Huggins still fishing for recruits

“We need another,” Huggins said. “We’re going to play faster. And we’re going to try and guard, which would be new in Morgantown. We’re going to play hard and guard.”

The subject seemed to fire up Huggins.

“We’re going to guard and rebound it,” he said. “We’re going to get back to working hard, like the people of West Virginia — black and blue. We’re going to out-tough people. We’re going to go guard. We’re going to go rebound.”

IMO, this speaks volumes. If anybody wants to understand what is going on in the basketball program, this tells you mostly what matters affected the decisions for many of the players to leave WVU the past two years.

Huggy has built a reputation for playing tough basketball. Kids play hard for him. They play tough defense, and they get after the ball.

Unfortunately, his staff missed on some recent recruits in many ways.

Harris and Henderson were brought into the program to be outside scoring threats. They did their job!

But, I believe Huggy thought he could get them to combine this skill with great defensive effort. IMO, this is what he successfully accomplished with Beilein's holdovers.

Neither Harris or Henderson wanted to play this style of ball…. and, they made the choice best for them.

WVU gave up an average of 78 pts/gm in Big 12 play. 75 pts over the course of the season.

That is unacceptable…

This season should define Huggs future here. Hopefully, the kids coming in are buying into the program. Kids are so soft these days that it is hard to get someone to come to WVU with the talent and work ethic needed. The last couple of years, it has been harder to keep them too.

Huggs may have lost his fire for the game. He needs to become the motivator, he once was. When is the last time we saw someone play their guts out like Desaun Butler? Huggs has made guys play better than they were in the past. He needs to start doing that again.

I think Juwan Staten bought in. He made remarkable progress from his So. to Jr. season.

He was placed into Huggy's doghouse is So. year too…
