Ian Rapport reported that Melvin Ingrim and Le'Veon Bell would be skiping mini camp in order to "secure" a new deal?

So, How does skipping this get them a new contract?

Don't expect to see Melvin Ingram, Le'Veon Bell on field soon

While all 32 NFL teams have returned to the practice field, some of them are a little short-handed. There are injured players, players staying off the field as they fight for new contracts and star players who received the franchise tag.

Chargers pass-rusher Melvin Ingram and Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell still have not signed their franchise tags -- the only two players not to do so.

How does skipping mandatory work outs, etc help your case in getting more money?

What organization wouldn't want a couple lazy, me-first guys on the squad? 9-7 here we come!

Keeps them from getting injured before signing that deal.

Makes perfect sense. Like not driving a new car before it is insured.

I guess it works both ways. Could make a team take a stand and not want to sign a guy but in reality, it seems more often than not (and right or wrong) it does often put the pressure on teams to get guys signed and seems to expedite the matter.

IMO if a guy held out I would be less likely to sign him until he came back. Once guys know you will do it they will try to take advantage

Haven't totally reasoned it out yet but it's probably either Goodell's or Brady's fault

In past it's been the way for a player to make the unspoken statement of " pay me or I wont be in training camp either"....

true. But I'd think it give teams more ammo to say right back to them, "ok, well then see ya, we aren't signing you."

Seems to me that it would be giving the team and not the player all the power

Well, it obviously doesn't work for players that aren't integral to the team's success. From the player's point of view, it's more like "I'm not going to risk injury until I'm paid" combined with "here's how the team will suffer without me". There's always a healthy dose of ego combined with self-preservation LOL.

That is very true and an excellent point

It's been split actually, I've seen Seattle ( since I live up here) tell their players that hold out just exactly what you said, and 9 out of 10 cases Hawks win. Others have meet the players wishes....

I believe it's the situation. If a team knows they have a young up and coming star, and they also know he could be a free agent the following year they usually cave and sign them a year earlier. Plus it could save them some $$ by looking them down prior to the FA market is set the following year...

It's a negotiating tool used by agents for all sorts of talented people. A person might get the show me the money flu.
