Sure he is. He's also free to comment on the current shitty state of NFL contracts and the hypocritical bullshit that all NFL teams have pulled when a player has outperformed his present contract and wants to renegotiate it to reflect as much. That's when teams and most fans within the team's fanbase start pulling that "Honor your contract." bullshit out their asses.

Wait...so, are you saying that a team ISN'T honoring a contract when they cut a player?

NFLPA is such a weak organization. Embarrassing, really.

Houston should WANT to extend Hopkins now. Do they want him to become a free agent? Or risk alienating him by tagging him?

Yes, I agree. Why they don't want to do this now is a mystery. Heck I think the rookie Fuller is making more money. The longer they wait, the higher Hopkins price tag is, so why put it off?

I'm sayin that when a team wants to cut a player because a coach/GM etc feel that player isn't playing up to standard or not earning his paycheck. They have no problem doing so and a player has little if any recourse. Even if a player has performed up to his contract. Teams will still ask players to take pay cuts. If a player balks he might himself looking for a job manana. You know all this already though.

So other than you playing Captian Saveaho to Niner Sickness. Why are we having this conversation?

Um isn't Houston capped on how much they can pay him because he's on his rookie deal?
The current CBA allows teams to extend contracts of players drafted AFTER round 1 when they have played 3 seasons. 1st round draft picks have a 4 year deal with a team option for a 5th. This is why RW was able to get an extension after the '14 season but Luck was not able to get one until this off-season. It's also why Bruce Irvin (1st round pick in 2012) didn't have his option picked up by Seattle prior to the '15 season which made him a UFA after his 4th year in the league.

And to add: if a 1st rounder gets the 5th year option exercised (must be done prior to the start of year 4), then at that time a contract extension can be negotiated. This is probably why Hopkins is looking for one....has only bee in the league 3 years but maybe his option was exercised for year 5?

1) What Matthieu said was on point. That doesn't mean it happens in every single case, but its happened enough.

What Mattieu said is ridiculous. When they out-play your contract, they get paid more on the next one. Your contract isn't based on what you're currently doing; it's based on what you've done in the past. Despite having to wait a couple of years before getting that money, every single player still gets what he's worth.

How you rationalize is ridiculous. What if Hopkins blows out his knee on his next route or gets hit by a drunk driver on his way home. Possible goodbye or at least put on serious hold for his next contract. When a player gets cut by a team are they cutting him for future performance? Of course not. Re-doing or doing a new contract while a player is under a present one is not something that's foreign or never done in the NFL.

As it stand s right now. Hopkins has never missed a game, Has started every game of his professional career and has trekked noticeably upward every year in stats/production and importance to his team. Having an all pro year particularly considering he had as many as 4 QBs throwing him the rock last year.

Hopkins is well within his rights to wanna be paid right now, he'd be kinda silly not to in fact. What's silly though is to act like Hopkins is outta pocket or outta bounds by wanting a new contract now instead of later. He's played his way into it regardless of how one looks at the situation.

What if anyone gets hit by a drunk driver on his way home? Does that mean some shmuck who put in long hours at work before he got his inevitable promotion was being underpaid that whole time?

Also, that's what insurance is for. You can even get an insurance policy for college players, much more in the NFL. An insurance company will assess an NFL player's performance and write him a policy proportionate to that performance (life-insurance companies will do likewise in the case of death). Any player, whether they're outperforming or underperforming, can get injured or shoot themselves in the leg at a night club & go to jail or fall off a motorcycle, and so on. That's life.

Nobody said he isn't. He's free to hold out if he wants to. Players have done so in the past; sometimes that move worked out, and sometimes it backfired.

Well, it's a combo of your proven ability + potential for continued play. If it were just based on what you've done, guys like Jerry Rice could still get big contracts. I know that's not what you meant, per se, but contracts are as much about expected performance in the future as they are about what you've already done.
