Very close, but i would give it to steve carlton... His IP is just more impressive than ryans, while they both are too similar with ERA and WHIP...

Well, he didn't have that many seasons where he was a top 3 pitcher in the league.

Hell, for a large portion of his individual seasons, he wasn't even the best pitcher on his team for that season.

Wow, exact same WHIP. For me, Carlton is the easy choice. I was kind of surprised that Lefty had a better K/BB.

You never watched Ryan?

His location was FAR, FAR AWAY from Cy Young caliber.

I was in Fenway when, in the 9th inning of a tie game he WALKED the winning run all the way around the bases!

4 straight walks. :omg:

I also saw him unintentionally bean Doug Griffin in consecutive seasons, which forceded a potential Gold Glove 2B to retire after less than 2 seasons. So help me Griffin in his rookie year could go to his left as well as any 2B I've ever watched.

I guess that is why those no-no's weren't perfect games.

What's really amazing is Ryan and Carlton are first and second, all time, in BBs but Carlton still has about 1,000 less then Ryan. That's roughly the difference between Carlton and Maddux, the latter being 116th on that list.

Interesting that Baseball-Reference has Ryan ranked #21 all-time and Carlton #51

It would appear that Ryan only hit Griffin once in his career. It happened in 1974, in Griffin's 5th season and his 406th game. He played in 72 more games that season and 154 games over the following 3.

Nice catch dragon. The following is from Wikipedia:

On April 30, 1974, Griffin was beaned by a Nolan Ryan fastball knocking him unconscious. The beaning left him with a concussion and temporary hearing loss, and likely caused the premature end to Griffin's career. On August 30, 1975 Griffin was beaned again, this time by Oakland's Dick Bosman. Griffin experienced hearing and equilibrium problems, but recovered very quickly. This time he had been wearing an ear flap with his protective helmet. Griffin played only sparingly in 1976, and was released after playing in only 5 games in 1977.

You're incorrect, wherever your info is coming from. I was in Fenway's bleachers both times! Griffin was a favorite of mine and Fenway tickets were a lot cheaper in those days.

BOSMAN beaned him the 2nd time?

You're sure of that?

Baseballreference. I'd be incredibly shocked if they're wrong.

I hope you don't think I'm pointing this out to tease you or poke fun at you, I'm certainly not. I probably have a ton of false memories of my own. But that's exactly why I don't rely heavily on those memories to form my opinions. I don't think you're stupid, or intentionally biased, or anything like that. But the brain is far from perfect, and sometimes it sees and remembers what it wants to.

Doug Griffin vs. Pitchers - Baseball-Reference.com

Griffin faced Ryan 25x, with 1 of them being a hit by pitch.

The 2nd time must have been in a game started by Ryan.

The time Ryan did bean him he was unconscious for 10-15 minutes during which play was stopped and players from both teams had to be had to be told to stay out of the medical staff's way. Griffin was still out cold when carried off the field on a stretcher.

I thought it was posted earlier in the thread that the second time was against Oakland?

Oh, or are you just talking about the second time you saw him get beaned, not the follow-up beaning that put him out?
