Because it's a stupid trophy that's based mostly on hype and magazines like SI will put out names from big schools because it gets them more readers, and they are less likely to look like they don't know a damn thing.
Like most things, this award has become a caricature of itself. It used to mean something. Now it is over-hyped by the media and the winner needs not only a great season or career, but a great team and PR department.

Because the winner has to be on a top four team, and Alabama is extremely likely to be a top four team. If it was about the best player in America or the most deserving player in America, my Avatar would probably be Melvin Gordon accepting the trophy.

Mariotta had 52 total TD's only 2 INT's, and a QBR of over 90 last year during the regular season. You're trying to tell me he wasn't the most deserving/best player?

Mariotta had TEN games over 90 ADJ QBR during the regular season.

Also conference championship game performance:

Gordon: 26 carries, 76 yards, 0 TD's, 0 catches against the #5 team in the country at the time
Mariotta: 25-38, 313 yards passing, 2 TD's, 10 carries, 33 yards, 3 TD's against the #7 team in the country at the time.

One game doesn't overpower the entire body of work.

Mariota's season was great. But look at those efficiency stats. Five players over the last four seasons had a higher passer rating than Mariota. A QBR of over 90? Well we had a QB with QBR of 93.9 and it got him eighth in the Heisman. What Mariota did wasn't unheard of. Russell played better in 2011 than Mariota did last year. RG3 played better in 2011 than Mariota did in 2014. Jameis played better in 2013 than Mariota did in 2014.

Melvin just had the second greatest RB season in NCAA history. Without taking a single carry in eight fourth quarters, he had 2,320 yards going into the Heisman ceremony on 7.6 YPC. He finished with the second most yards in NCAA history. He reached 2,000 yards in the fewest carries. He tied Barry Sanders' YPC, and none of the other 2,000 yards guys came close. And he did it with a much worse supporting cast than Mariota.

So Mariota had the fourth best QB season in the last four years, Melvin had the best RB season in 25 years. It shouldn't be close.

Sure one game doesn't override an entire season, but when you're a complete no show in your biggest game of the year, it's going to hurt your cause. Also, that QBR and QB Rating for Mariota included the both the playoff games, which brought those numbers down. It was 90.9 with those games being his second and fourth worst games respectively.

Also, Oregon played a much tougher schedule than Wisconsin did.

Also, I'm willing to bet, had the roles been reversed and Mariota played his worst game of the season in the conference championship game, and Oregon lost by 50, and Gordon had 5 TD's against Ohio State and won comfortably that Gordon would have won the Heisman. Wisconsin played one game against a team that finished ranked during the regular season, lost by 50, and Gordon averaged 2.9 yards a carry in that game.
