I'm with you. I wasn't guessing the lineup that I would choose, I was making my guess of what Mattingly will choose.

Things are pointing towards Brandon League starting the season on the DL. I don't think the roster has room for more than one NRI pitcher to make it since it's pretty much Dustin McGowan's spot on the 40-man that they'd take. I'd guess Paco. He's got big league experience, he's a lefty, and he's having a great spring.

It's really down to splitting hairs between a bunch of great options this year.

I'd guess McGowen takes League's spot, although I think Yimi Garcia needs to be in this bullpen.

If McGowan gets a spot in the bullpen, then someone else needs to get waived from the 40-man for Santos (who both of us guessed at to be on the Opening Day 25-man).

Mattingly said League would be missing a "couple months", could be a 60 day DL candidate.

Yessir that makes a big difference. Also, with Hector Olivera on the way, it looks like Darwin Barney might not have a place on this 40-man.

I really never understood them re-signing Barney anyways... but oh well.

At the time, he was the only legitimate defensive replacement for the infield.

I was fine with keeping Arruebarrena.

Technically, we still have him. It's all about having the depth at the fringes of the 40-man. Darwin Barney is better than Arruebarrena in my opinion, but yeah you're right that he's another all-glove defensive replacement on the time.

I think they're pretty similar in the fact neither will be able to hit much, but Arruebarrena is an elite SS, Barney is better at 2B, Arruebarrena a little more valuable. But whatever...

I think you're right. Maybe with some more everyday at-bats in the minors, EA can learn how to hit.

EA has some pop in his bat, he needs to work on his swing.

Yeah, the vibe I've always gotten was that his swing just needs a lot of work. He won't get that work as a defensive replacement in the bigs. Everyday work in the minors should be good for him.
