As a bass player specifically? Maybe underrated. Seems like bass players who take on more than the role of traditional bass players either get too much credit for their bass playing, or not enough.

Loved ELP...band was way ahead of it's time back in the 70s...a mix of jazz, fusion and rock-n-pop. The band never got the recognition they deserved. I still listen to em today and yeah, the band member's egos clashed as all "A-class" personalities will.

Good stuff.

Just my two pennies:
  • I could see Lake with the Moody's as well as Yes
  • Greg Lake would have probably been at least an ok fit in Genesis, too.
  • Wakeman kicks ass (sorry Yoga, but I really love his solo stuff as well as a lot of Yes).
  • Hendrix wouldn't have been a great fit in ELP, at least not for very long (random)
  • What about John Wetton traded to ELP for future considerations?

ELP was one of those bands that were extremely talented and unique, While mainly a Bass player Greg Lake was also the band's Guitarist and Vocalist. Keith Emerson (Keyboards) and Carl Palmer (Percussion) were outstanding in their own right.

*I think you misinterpreted my post....I totally dug Wakeman w/ Yes...it was Moraz I didn't care for.

I know this may be sacrilegious but I always considered Greg to be the premeire bass player of the early 70s. I know Jack Bruce and Felix Pappalarid were good but to me Greg Lake is the most over looked bass player of all time.
Jack Bruce was the best.

Cream was in my opinion one of the best bands in the history of rock with a lineup of Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce. Those three dudes made some incredible music.

@yoga≈surfing Yes was one those bands that either you liked or hated back when I was young. I know for me though I thought except for Fragile they weren't as good as other prog bands like ELP were.
I was always an ELP fan. Saw them live in the OLD Boston Garden. Awesome show. Carl Palmer still amazes me with what he did during a show.
