Michael Grabner was been placed on waivers by the Panthers.

If he clears waivers, he will start the season with Rochester of the AHL. This is a bit of a fall from grace for Grabner, of whom big things were expected when he was acquired from the Canucks after an impressive stint with the team last season. If you're getting ready for an upcoming draft, it's safe to scratch him off your list of sleepers.

Crazy that they would be giving up on him so early, especially a bottom feeding team. I'd be looking for the islanders to pick him up.

does that necessarily mean that they are giving up on him?

I'm assuming that if he needed to clear waivers to go to the AHL (don't know for sure though).
jstew had mentioned in another thread that he was out of shape and pretty useless in FLA's training camp.

Well seeing as they are offering him up to 29 other teams for free it seems like they are giving up on him. There is no way this kid clears waivers.

Toronto or Edmonton claims him. You would have to think so. Someone will.

Okay guys give me tho lowdown on this kid. He was taken 14th overall in 2006. The Hockey News had him rated 29th. They also had Claude Giroux rated 60th. Shows how little they know.

Anyway I know he's a good skater. Is there any one thing that's held him back from the NHL?

I think its probably many things ... lack of confidence (he sulked when he didnt make the team out of camp last year). I also remember talk that he put too much pressure on himself

he has been benched at every level of play in north america because he didnt bring it every night (junior to ahl)

today i heard people talking that he doesnt have very good hockey sense and he relies on other players to put him in positions to score ... he doesnt put himself in those positions

not too mention he has a 10 cent head ... breaking his ankle playing warm up soccer

good luck

Doesn't every team play warm up soccer?

Has Grabner ever shown a willingness to backcheck?

I see this as a golden opportunity for Grabner. The Islanders will be without Okposo & Schremp for awhile. He should get top 6 minutes given his skill level. If he can't take advantage of this opportunity, I don't think he can make it in the NHL anywhere.

great hands, great wheels, incredibly inconsistent.
I don't remember him going into the corners too often either.

good talent, just needs to put it together.
if he can do that, honestly I have no idea.
maybe playing with 1st line players will get him more motivated.

talent is undeniable.... effort?? not so sure about that.

Effort is one thing every Islanders player gives. His own teammates won't put up with him if he doesn't give 100% let alone Scott Gordon & the rest of the coaching staff.

Gordon's system should fit Grabner perfectly. He wants an up tempo in your face game. Grabner's skating ability should allow him to do succeed. Only time will tell.

Grabner is fast, skilled, soft and streaky.

I think his speed and skill outweigh downside and that he'll be a 25g 25a player in the nhl it's 2nd line or bust. I'd hope gillis would take him for free if offered.

PS look at the first post I called it :P

Yeah you nailed it. Sweet. I just hope he figures things out with the Islanders. They need a sniper in the top 6 badly right now.
